The length of hibernation for American black bears have been affected as winter becomes warmer. They are either waking from hibernation earlier or failing to hibernate. As the temperature in winter increases for each degree Celsius, the length of hibernation for American black bears decreases by six days! These bears need cool weather in order to successfully hibernate, thus they tend to hibernate during the winter; winters are usually when food is limited for black bears, and, when hibernating, black bears do not eat, drink or eliminate waste. Another factor of why blacks bears haven't been hibernating for long is because of increased food supply. When bears' food sources run out due to warmer weather, they can easily obtain people's food because of the human-wild land interface, the area where developed land and the wild lands join. People have made numerous complaints about the damage inflicted by ravenous black bears looking for food. Human-bear conflicts are said to increase because climate change might continue to decrease their food supply and disrupt hibernation. I think that because bears will rummage into peoples' food and the existing fear of bears, people most likely will want to hunt them down. We always talk about climate change, but we don't actually know how much it can affect natural events such as hibernation and how that impacts the other inhabitants (like people) in the environment.
