I found it quite interesting for the students to talk to the parents about their work. I know that unless I ask my kids or they ask me for help I don't know what their working on and not sure what their learning. This is an interesting idea of student reporting grades, also having them justify to you the grade they should have. I still trying to wrap my brain around how this would work.

I like the idea of giving the students the opportunity and ability to author their grade and not just have it happen to them. It creates ownership. Side by Side assessment is so valuable for the continual ongoing feedback and the opportunity it creates for the student to make mistakes and fix them. The concept of having the students emailing the parents of where they are they are at
and how they are going to remedy the problems is great, the part I like about that the most is the point Tucker makes by saying I don't want you to apologize I want you to explain what is lacking and what you are going to do to make it up.

In Graphic Designs we use side by side interviews everyday with the use of new tools or techniques. As a CTE teacher we have to promote our class daily to make our program grow or next year I could be teaching a different class or not teaching here anymore.

I love the idea of email parents their progress. We would get more support from our community if teacher's would have the students email their weekly progresses home to their parents with ways they can improve themselves.

I loved this idea. This would help students know exactly why they are getting the grade they are earning by forcing them to articulate through writing how they are performing. This would make them accountable to their parents, the teacher, and themselves for their performance. I think too often we get "beat up" by some in our community because some students goes home and blames the teacher for the bad grade. If a student is sending home a weekly email identifying exactly how they are performing and what they need to do would be so helpful.

I have used student-led conferences and I really like them. Students are the ones who explain everything to the parent and answer their questions. It helps them and their parents to place responsibility where it should be. I have used it often with students in my office.

I really like this template

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sk-t1n0i9hhYJkKiFpu6gH2wkEMWmZM9N8_mJ0R_30A/edit

I feel that most parents and students would be taken aback at first when presented with these communication tactics. However, they are all vital. Emailing and phone calls can only go so much.
My favorite one is the student-led conferences would help the students take more ownership of their educational goals. It will also allow the student to "defend" their stance on how or why they have earned their individual grade.
This would also help eliminate the communication problems that arise between the student and parents. Students would now take more a vital role in explaining their performance and evidence to the teacher and parents.

I can see the benefit of students getting that immediate feedback. The problem I run into is taking that time out of my class period. I know, however, that doing this will actually help. It seems counterintuitive to me, but I know it actually is not. I would like to do this more...and the more rubrics I have, the easier it will be to facilitate this.

I love the idea of implementing the idea of students emailing their parents themselves. I think that this is something that I can implement right away. I feel like grade interviews and side by side assessments need to happen after procedures are in place for student goal setting and self-assessment. I don't feel like I can immediately implement these into my classes.

Both of these processes seem like amazing metacognitive exercises that would benefit students greatly. And although it seems a bit overwhelming to attempt at this point, I can clearly see how adding this to our standards-based learning practice in the near future will benefit all students. The grade interviews seem to put a bit more responsibility on the student, where the side by side assessments shares that responsibility a bit more.
I cannot think of a single more powerful way to communicate progress or lack of than to have students compose emails/written explanations to report their grows and glows! Wow, the thoughts of what a life changing chain of events that this would lead to in our community really intrigues me.

Malissa - Having the students send an email to their parents is so powerful! It puts the responsibility right back on the shoulders of the student, and I love that idea! Side-by-side assessments sound awesome, and I would like to implement them eventually. The grade interviews are a good idea, but definitely something to do down the road...
