You would have Maroons that did different tasks like fishing. There is a distinction between slaves and Maroons. The most incredible thing to her are the Maroon in SC were living in caves that they have made. They dug into the ground and they lived there. They didn’t want people to know where they lived. They had family and friends living there. They had furniture and tubes that brought the smoke far away.
-Some of them lived in trees.
-Maroons did not want to fight. They wanted to be free and continue to be free as well.
-When thinking about Maroons it's very diverse.
-Maroon runaways stayed in the south.
-1.2 million slaves from the southeast (VA, Maryland, etc.) were sold down in the deep south.

(borderland Maroons v inner land Maroons)
-They would walk places at night to see different things and different people, and to get the things they needed, they took back the things they believed to be theirs.
- They would fish and hunt, exchanging what they had with others on the plantation or in the city, allowed for communication to from strong links with others
-Some lived in the trunks of trees or caverns, a lot lived in caves that they had made in the ground (even here in SC)
-(I question the stability of a natural cave, I really question the stability of a man made one. Did any of these people ever die in a collapse of their self made cave?
-They had furniture and stoves in the cave, pipes for the stoves lead far away to keep their location rather unknown
-They didn't want to fight, they wanted to be free. They had to resort to Guerilla Tactics. Dissappear, regroup, and continue.

-the border land Maroon (live at the border of the cities) and the inner land Maroon (they lived in more excluded land- live on there own)
-to see the interaction between both groups is really interesting. There was a lot of interaction. Border land Maroon's would walk at night to the cities and plantations and would get what they needed. They would take back from the slave owners what they felt was rightfully there's. They took a lot of risk in getting food and information. Then you would have inner land Maroons who would hunt and fish.
-those who lived at the border lands of plantations literally disappeared from the face of the earth. Some lived on tree trunks, and others lived in caves. They would disguise themselves and become a part of the environment. They had a very elaborate type of construction. For example, a family lived in VA and they had 15 children. Children all over the United States lived underground. For the parents it was better for the children to live that way, then in slavery.
-Maroons did not want to fight, they wanted to live free and continue to live free.
-Authorities had a goal and that was to dismantle Maroon communities, kill the leaders, and return them back to there owners
-Trial records of Maroons in Louisiana give a lot of information of the running of Maroons and what they were doing *this information is crucial because the Maroons were people who did not want to be found nor known so they did not want to leave records
-we have to rethink the Maroon experience because it is much more diverse than what we imagine.
-some Maroons worked for free blacks because they were a cheap source of labor
-why did people become Maroons? because most run away slaves went to northern cities and some would go to southern cities and pose to have freedom. In the 1790s the domestic slave trade was created. Slaves from the north were sold to the deep south and families were completely scattered and dislocated.
-Many would run away and try to find there families. They would live in the woods. - the reunification of families was one of the main reasons.
-if you lived as a run away in northern cities you were still under white authority & when you were a Maroon you were living under your own rule.

* There were connections between maroons and people who were still enslaved. Also connections between farm and cities. Maroons were not always large communities, but small ones as well.
* Maroons located in the Carolinas, lived in caves. There were families full of children and friends. Had methods of construction to stay hidden. Children all over the United States were raised under ground, some until emancipation. Parents knew they were safer underground than out in the world.
* Maroons did not want to fight, but wanted to leave free. Idea was to disappear and re-locate themselves. The official’s goals were to capture the Maroon leaders and murder them in public, and then return their followers to their “owners.”
When Maroons escaped, it really messed with the official’s plans.
* Maroons were cheap source of labor. Some worked for free blacks, and sometimes, slave owners.
* Domestic slave trade: 1.2 million AFAMs were sold to the Deep South. Families were completely dislocated.
* One major reason people became Maroons, was to reunite with their families after being dislocated. Wanted to stay near loved ones and have some sort of control over their own life.
* Vast majority of runaways were from Virginia.
* Undergroud rail road did not go into the South, worked in the North.
* Wanted a new life for themselves. Completely different life from anyone in the country.
* Lived in forest

It shows me that they valued their freedom, even if they weren’t truly free. While they weren’t physically enslaved by slave owners, they were in a bondage that kept them in fear. I also think it may have been interesting to see how Maroons functioned in the world after emancipation.
