As we learned through the "Cuts and Transitions 101" video from last week, this type of transition is typically used to establish the passage of time. There are a variety of times throughout the movie where this feature is being used to establish time passing. One of the first major time jumps shown through this dissolve feature is at 19:27, where the screen transitions from Antione throwing out the garbage at night to his mother waking him up angrily in the morning in his sleeping bag. Along with the establishment that a night time has passed and we are now in the next day of the characters world, this technique here also creates an emphasis on the harsh home environment Antione is living in, from night to morning he is being yelled at by his mother to do something and up until this point we don't see her showing him any kind of remorse, but he seems fairly used to it, allowing us to infer that he is accustomed to this type of relationship and home environment. This night time/morning transition suggests that this is a normal day in the life of our main character Antione.]]> 2023-10-02 23:26:52 UTC https://padlet.com/nschmitt01_2/y5litawxunuvyhm7/wish/2729366544 nschmitt01_2 https://padlet.com/nschmitt01_2/y5litawxunuvyhm7/wish/2729390380 Towards the end of the film, after Antione is caught attempting to put back the typewriter he lands himself in juvenile court, much to the pleasure of his father. As we seem him getting placed in the cell and talking to the other inmate, shortly after we get a dissolve after the camera has moved far back enough so that we can see almost the entire court office with Antione and the other inmate in the background. Then slowly, the camera dissolves into a scene where two of the officers are playing a board game, this creates the idea of a slow passage of time in the characters world.  This concept is later persuaded to us more through being shown as the camera moves around the office slowly until we see Antione sleeping on the floor of his cell. 
Overall, throughout the film there are various times where the dissolve effect is used to establish and emphasis the passing of time in the story, this feature allows us to gain insight into Antione's lifestyle and help us understand why he tends to act out the way he does.]]> 2023-10-03 00:01:53 UTC https://padlet.com/nschmitt01_2/y5litawxunuvyhm7/wish/2729390380
