It starts off with Lisa dreaming about a bumble bee. She wakes up to her mom screaming at her dad to get over there and he puts his arm around Lisa and says German's. There are planes flying overhead and they are dropping leaflets saying that they were on the Denmark side and helping them. They walk to school and when they get there Lisa and her friend are writing notes to each other.

Questions:

How scared are the parents
Will they still do their Jewish traditions
Will they pretend to not be Jewish.

She woke up to her dad talking and everytime she closed her eyes she saw German soldiers.She tried to think of happy times just like when they went on a boat trip with their family and friends. The German forces told the danish to put blackout curtains on their windows so no light would filter in. It was passover and they invited Erik’s family over for Seder dinner. She isn’t stunned or angry, she is just scared. Lisa is remembering all the conversations that her parents have been  discussing at dinner time. Lisa’s family listen to the radio every night and her father has been furious and he cant sit at the table without knocking something over. At the dinner Lisa is piecing together that the germans are trying to capture them and not help them.


Questions:
Will they get caught and go to a concentration camp
Is the dad going to try to poison the german soldiers

Predictions:
I think the Dad is going to try to do the plan with the poisoning.
I think it isn't going to work and get his family in trouble and go to a concentration camp.

It starts off with Stefan and lisa chatting about their plan. There were fences around the school and there are prisoners on the other side. School will only be every other day said Ms.Jensen. When stefan got home they made the plan. She was at the Laundry place and then she went on the streetcar. She was in the streetcar and she saw 2 german soldiers walk in the streetcar she was feeling sick she stood up then the streetcar turned ands threw up on them. they saw the papers and were going to arrest them but the people on the streetcar gotr her out in time. She completed the mission and got back home safely.

  1. What is this author suggesting about war in this poem?


The author is suggesting that war is useless. The author made it seem that going to war is just to get money. If you saw the exact same man at the bar for a beer you wouldn’t treat him the same way because it was just them getting commands from their country. That is why war is so pointless .

  • In chapter one, the members of Lisa’s family have different reactions to the invasion of the Nazis. Describe their reactions. (4)

    • Stefan:

    Stefan was very mad that Denmark had surrendered; he was screaming and complaining that Denmark hadn't tried.

    Mother and Father:

    The Mother was worried about the kids and she was crying. The father doesn't show much emotion but I think it was because his kids would be scared.

    Erik:

    Erik doesn't show any concern for the invasion. His parents only read the newspapers and don't listen to the radio. They also aren't interested in politics 

    Lisa:

    Lisa is pretty scared about the invasion, when her dad said “Germans” she got a cold shiver down her back.


    1. In chapter two, what dilemma does Lisa’s father face? (2)

    Lisa’s father has to choose between trying to poison the German soldiers or to not do anything.

    1. At the very end of chapter two, Lisa has an important realization about how much the war has changed things. What does she realize? Explain your answer. (2)


    Lisa realizes that ther natzis arn’t there for protecting the danish the are there to take the jews and if her dad got caught.

    She follows them because they are up to something suspicious. Lisa was following them and when she got on the streetcar there was a note and the boys were going to blow up things that the Germans could benefit from.

    I have a dilemma. Please help me. My dad is a doctor , I have a Dad, Mom and a brother in my family who help me with every day activities. I am Jewish and the Nazi’s are after us. If we get caught, me and my family may end up in a concentration camp.  A bunch of jews are getting caught and going missing. My school yard is next to a concentration camp. I come home with stories about the people there. They are skin and bone and starving. 

    I came up with an idea. My dad is a doctor and he has access to all the drugs at the hospital. I wonder if he faked give the nazi good drugs but actually give them poison. I shared the idea with him but I am wondering if I should have given the idea. 

    If he gets caught, it would be my fault and we might go to a concentration camp. I remember my Dad came home with a very sad story. He was with a family in the hospital then when he went to the other room the Nazi’s came in the room and shot every one in the room. If that happens to us but in our home that would be devastating.Did I do the right thing? Abby please help!

    Susanne’s motavation is the bombing that killed their parents. Susanne wants payback.

    Lisa thinks that the Germans are out to kill. She thinks if they would go to war or take a step back and be better then the germans. Stephan thinks war and Lisa thinks stepping back and regrouping would be better. Lisa is concerned that there would be war and they would have to fight.

    1. “I remember I was dreaming about a bee. A giant bumblebee. It was buzzing in my ear; it was going to sting me. I opened my eyes and sat up with a start, but the buzzing didn’t stop.” (p. 1)



    Lisa woke up to this buzzing in her ear thinking it was a bee and she was dreaming of a bee but it was actually german planes. 






    1. “I leap off, dragging my bag, run into the grass and trees beside the stop, and finish throwing up. Then I sink down by my sack. I’m weak, I’m shaking. I think I’m crying, and my mouth tastes terrible. I want to go home. How did I get myself into this? I think back to the streetcar. All those people – they saved me. Maybe they saved my life.” (p. 29)



    She was transporting these illegal letters to the denmark people and she had a bad stomach. The streetcar jilted and she fell over on the German soldiers and threw up on them. The popel get her out of it, if they didn't she could've got caught and killed.






    1. “She whispers to me, ‘That was for Mama and Papa. But it was only the first.’ She’s actually enjoying herself.
    A chill runs down my spine. My God, I think, these Germans are dragging us all down to their level. How will we keep ourselves better than them?” (p.46)


    Lisa is worried that the Germans are killing jews and she thinks they are pulling them down to their level and they will take over denmark.








    1. “ ‘No, Father, it can’t be!’ I cry. I’m not willing to accept what he’s getting at. What does it matter that we are Jewish? I don’t feel any different than anyone else, and I’m not treated differently. Now will I have to be only a Jew? Is being a Jew all that’s important about me? The very name Eichmann makes me feel sick to my stomach.” (p. 57)


    They are at the dinner table and Susanne said that the Germans broke into a jewish community center  and stole all the names that were jewish. Lisa got very scared at the fact that they had all of the names and would be out there









    1. “ ‘I’m afraid there will be no service tonight at the synagogue,’ Father continues. ‘Rabbi Melchior told everyone at the early service that he’ll be closing the  synagogue. He’s going on holiday.’
    I almost laugh. The rabbi going on holiday on Rosh Hashanah?
    Then it hits me.” (p.62)


    They were going to the synagogue that night and she was worried that there would be no service and it said that Rabbi melchior was going on holiday. He went on holiday to escape the german attack.
