Ralph is the first character introduced and is called the 'fair boy', presenting him as fair and democratic from his first appearance.

Ralph is important as he keeps the democracy on the island to the best of his abilities. When he starts to become savage and kill Simon, it represents democracy falling and the island going into chaos.

In the first chapter, Ralph appears quite unfriendly towards Piggy but by the middle of the novel he respects Piggy as an integral part of the group and listens to his ideas.

Ralph is presented as the good in society and appears disturbed that the boy with the mulberry birthmark could be dead in chapter 2. However in chapter 9 he has changed to the extent that he assists the others in the murder of Simon.

Ralph is presented as very good but is not without his flaws.

For instance, he is quite rude to Piggy at the start of the novel, judging him by his weight and glasses. He also helps the others.

Some argue that Ralph's biggest flaw is his belief and trust that humanity will make the right decision and do the right thing.
