Summative assignment:

A researched & developed Dissertation Proposal with a Research Review (approx. 2000 words).
A Dissertation Proposal template, which also includes an Ethics checklist, can be found in the Dissertation Preparation Aula space. Submission requirements for the Dissertation Proposal (Summative assessment) There are six parts to the Dissertation Proposal (a template will be provided):
1. A Lead Question / Research Question Your Lead Question should relate to your practice/industry and will be developed & refined throughout this unit. You will develop this throughout this unit.
 2. Proposal Overview (approx. 1000 words) The Proposal Overview is a researched, written summary of your idea for a Dissertation. It should outline your aims and objectives, rationale and research methods. It should be organised into paragraphs and give a credible view of how you intend to tackle the Dissertation. Use the headings in the Dissertation Proposal template and use the step-by- step Proposal Overview writing guide on Aula.
3. (3 key companies or people) Research Review (approx. 1000 words) The Research Review (sometimes called a ‘literature review’) should outline key theories, ideas and concepts in your chosen field. This will require you to ‘map out’ who the key thinkers, writers, theorists and practitioners are in your field, and outline what these argue, propose, oppose and suggest (guidelines can be found in the handbook). This should be accompanied by a Bibliography.
4. (3-4 chapters) Chapter Plan The Chapter Plan should indicate specific primary and secondary research sources you intend to use in support of your Dissertation. Sources should be listed according to the Harvard System of referencing. The Chapter Plan should also include a proposed chapter plan (usually 3-5 chapters for a Written Dissertation).
5. Ethics checklist The Ethics checklist should outline considerations of ethics, in particular in relation to Primary Research. This is about keeping you and potential participants (and their data) safe. An Ethics checklist template will be provided.
6. (Padlet) Progress Map: The Progress Map is a form of a time-management document, and should outline, how, exactly, you intend to use your time ahead of, and in preparation for, the Dissertation unit. The Progress Map should include key dates and deadlines, should give clear indications of targets and goals, and should give a realistic timeframe for your research activities. This may take the form of a diary, calendar, Gantt chart, timeline, diagram, or any other format that will allow you to map out time. If this exists online, make sure you add a link and password (if applicable). 

According to Thinknum Alternative Data, a research firm, the tech giants are looking to hire in these areas too. Among the Big Five job listings mentioning ar or vr jumped from about 75 in August 2020 to 567 today. Meta and Amazon are posting about 200 such jobs each at the moment—a striking fact given that Amazon employs 20 times as many people as Meta does.

None of this is to say that Mr Atkinson’s oligopolists are investing in a way likely to maximise innovation itself, let alone the economic and social benefits it can bring. It is hard not to believe that the sheer size of these incumbents constitutes some sort of block on radical attempts to reinvent the world. But though each company has its particular interests, our picture of their priorities shows that in many sectors there really is significant competition.

And for all that innovation is an easy word to throw about, throwing huge amounts of money and resources at it is much harder. Far better that big tech should do that hard work than just sit on its backside maximising its rents.
