Standpoint theory in feminism is relatively new. Coined in the 1970's. This theory emerged from Marxist arguments that claimed that people from oppressed classes have special access to knowledge that is not available to people from a privileged class.

This theory helps to think about other societal aspects of a person's life when dealing with feminist issues. Most represented feminists are middle class white women. Many other women get swept under the rug. Standpoint theory puts into perspective the other factors that contribute to women's lives and their privileges that they have or don't have and how that affect how their seen in society
