Overview of the Requirements for the Individual Oral

Prompt: The individual oral is based on a response to the following prompt: "Examine the ways in which the global issue of your choice is presented through the content and form of the two works that you have studied."
Global Issue: You will select one global issue as a focus for the discussion of the two works. During your assessment, you must discuss how the global issue is expressed through both form and content. Content refers to the subject matter of the text. Form refers to authorial choices that comprise the text.
Authorial Choices: represent the form itself (drama, fiction, nonfiction, poetry, etc.) and the structural and stylistic textual features that authors use to express the global issue. This means that you will select a global issue and discuss it through a literary lens. Click here for some authorial choices based on genre.
Works: the assessment is based on two works studied: one translated and one in the original language of the course (English). The works selected for the individual oral cannot be used for any other assessment including the HL essay. You will choose two extracts (one from each work, of no more than 40 lines each) and examine how the global issue is present in the extracts and throughout the texts.
Extracts and student outline (to be used during the IO): On the day of the exam, you may bring unannotated copies of the extracts and one prepared outline of no more than ten bullet points into the exam room. Your teacher will provide you with this official form. As part of the planning process, you will select your texts and extracts and prepare your outline under the guidance of your teacher. Keep in mind that your teacher is a guide and will not select works or extracts for you, nor can she edit your outline. You must provide your teacher with final copies of your extracts and outline at least one week in advance of the assessment. It is important to note that the outline should not be a script. Rather, it should include touchpoints to help you generate an organized and cohesive delivery. The extracts can also demonstrate how authorial choices in structure and style develop the global issue. Think of each extract as a springboard that enables you to connect the global issue in the passage to the work as a whole.
Delivery: Your delivery time is 10 minutes, followed by 5 minutes of questioning by your teacher. The entire assessment is 15 minutes. It will be recorded for moderation by the IB.
