I feel that it is important for children to take responsibility of their actions and respect diversity. It is essential to nurture SED as early as possible to help children manage their stress and anxiety.  It is crucial that educators serve as models of healthy behaviour.

 I believed that if children were given the opportunity to express their emotions and be in a safe, welcoming, and conducive environment, they will be able to explore and make more discoveries. Providing opportunities to children to unleash their inner potential to express, think, experiment, observe the cause and effect and discover the learning in many ways will help them in their early years. As an educator, I am always researching how I can improve myself and my teaching techniques with children for us to enjoy the learning journeys together. Learning will be evident when the children can show more than what you think they are capable of and achieved. There is a quote that says, ‘Seeing is believing and believing is knowing’.  

Offering my infants to explore with loose parts and nature helps to stimulate the infants’ senses and development. My team and I created an environment called ‘Light space’ where we displayed the materials associated with light sources, mirrors and translucent coloured film and the infants learned and discover the lights and shadows. Through playing with lights and shadows, children explored reflections, sizes, transparency and colour to position, interplay, and shapes. For example, the infants discovered that shadow is made when an object or their body part blocks the light. As the light passes through the translucent coloured film, it reflects and creates an image on the surface. I am amazed at the infants learned so much from this space. It was a successful project for me. 

I was not able to join in for the first meet up but I am very excited to meet other PASTELs to learn, unlearn and relearn with all of the professionals soon! ✌🏻

A couple of the projects focused on SED for the kindergarten classes. Would like to share some of the activities conducted here:
1. The Colour Monster
Using Book Creator and the colour scale in The Colour Monster by Anna Llenas, the K1s began to explore expressing their feelings with colours. Scenarios were given to children to share how they will feel in those situations. Thereafter, children will fill the chosen colours into "bottles", draw how they can react positively in different scenarios and do a short video recording to express their thoughts. These expressions, ideas and strategies were then compiled into ebooks for them to share with others. 

2. Shadows
An extension to how children express themselves, we got the children explore how their shadows can express different emotions. As they create different shadows to express different emotions, we captured them using videos and photographs. Thereafter, the group reviewed the videos and photographs. This is when we facilitated the group to think about how body language plays a part in our daily communication. 

3. Capture the moment
Teachers take pictures of moments which they would like to talk about with the children. These moments may be like when someone didn't clean up the table after lunch, or any situation which helps to draw children's attention. Using the example of uncleaned table after lunch, the teachers will import the picture onto Chatterpix app and add a voice recording to mimic how the table "felt" when it was left dirtied. I have always believed that children must be provided with every opportunities to discover  about themselves. Time, pace and space is important for children to realise their potential. As no one is alike, I have always tried my very best to create different experiences for them. I have particularly noticed children tend to express themselves freely when it comes to outdoor learnings. Even the quieter ones are encouraged to speak up.
Our outdoor learnings are planned everyday with nature walk, gross motor skills and playground experiences. I set aside a day for children to plan their own outdoor experience. Everyone is given a chance to decided what they would like to do. All these ideas are collated and planned   weekly. It could be as simple as playing "Duck Duck Goose". When their ideas are acknowledged, they feel excited to participate and invite participation with peers. I feel it boosts their self confidence in planning and taking charge. They feel excited to know that they are part of the planning and that their ideas will come alive.

Thank you for the arranging our first learning community session. It was great to see and meet everyone. The session was  interesting. I got to see and hear everyone's different and similar views and experiences. At my school, we also have discussion to talk about our new learnings, practices and ideas. It was great to see it at the session too! 
We also like reading books to children and sometimes these books would lead us to a start of a new project. For instance, one of the mini project we did was about an artist. We explored her artworks and found out why and how her works were inspired and documentation of her feelings and emotions. This created a new opportunity for us to discuss and share about our social and emotional developments and skills.

2. Use stories to share about different social situations.  I usually use Kindness stories.
3. Be a role model of the emotions and behaviors so that children learn and show positive behaviours / reactions.
4. Dramatise scenarios and ask children open-ended questions, such as “What would you do?” to help develop problem-solving skills.
5. Engage children in activities with the intention of promoting turn taking and sharing.
6. Be children's voices by helping to articulate their thoughts/emotions aloud. (applicable to children who have challenges expressing themselves in words.
7. Be an active listener by listening to children, responding to them  and providing  choices.
8. Embrace dislikes – e.g. children do not like to eat vegetables.  Teacher promotes a positive attitude by sharing health benefits of eating vegetables.

Was going thru' the video collections from the SED courses that I attended. Found this to be quite powerful (at least for me) and would like to share it here with all my PASTELS' buddies. I had shared this video with the rest of the teachers at my centre during one of our Curriculum Meetings. The feedback was very positive and teachers had shared that they did not know that these were some of the feelings/emotions that children went through before they manifested into unruly behaviours that could sometimes be out of control.
And it was just amazing to see the children expressing and articulating their feelings and learning to redirect and practice 'Mindfulness' as a way to calm themselves down. Watching this has given me new insights and differing perspectives on the social and emotional 'experiences' that children actually go through and they were "much more than meets the eye".

I personally think that children who have ability in managing their emotions tend to be happier, show greater motivation to learn, have a more positive attitude toward school and are more eager to participate in class activities.

Other than a material-rich environment to stimulate social interactions among children, a quiet and conducive corner that allow them to calm and cool down also help them to learn to regulate their emotions, such as from separation anxiety.
Teachers and caregivers promote children’s social and emotional health by establishing trusting relationships, created when teachers express warmth, affection, and respect. As evidenced in the early year classrooms I observed, teachers who prioritize developing children’s social and emotional health are richly rewarded with happy, engaged children who learn to avoid and resolve conflicts, share and take turns, and express their emotions in productive ways.
