Zheng He was the commander for a fleet of ships under Chinese emperor Yongle. His first fleet consisting of 317 ships was the largest naval force until WWI. As a young boy, his father was killed, and he was taken prisoner. In this time, he was castrated and became a eunuch. Since he was a devout Muslim, he was able to convince the emperor to put Mosques under imperial protection. Until his death, he led seven voyages under the emperor, and sailed as far west as Egypt. One main reason for his voyages was to gain medicine for people with smallpox. He also made considerable geographical location identification with his voyages.
