Yellow Journalism was a style of newspaper that emphasized overly dramatic facts, today known as fake news. The effect of yellow journalism later played a huge role between the United States and Spain. An important topic of this yellow journalism was the explosion of the U.S.S Maine.
"The Journal Offers $50,000 Reward for the Conviction of the Criminals Who Sent 258 American Sailors to Their Death. Naval Officers Unanimous That the Ship Was Destroyed on Purpose." This is the opening statement to a yellow journalism article during the time. This article shaped many views. Americans blamed the Spaniards which brought a hatred for them. Not only until later was found that the explosion was an accident, and had nothing to do with the Spanish. Yet the fake news blew up so big and false, so many people believed it, which caused the American-Spanish War

Reconcentration Camps

"By the late 1800s, the Spanish were losing control of Cuba. Concerned about insurrection in the countryside, they moved rural Cubans to “reconcentration” camps where the Spanish claimed they would be better able to protect them. " These reconcentration camps were in absolute horrible conditions. There were so many women and children crammed in once place. Some women and children were sick, some were dying, and some were becoming sick.
"There is still alive the only living witness, a young girl of 18 years, whom we found seemingly lifeless on the ground; on her right-hand side was the body of a young mother, cold and rigid, but with her young child still alive clinging to her dead breast; on her left-hand side was also the corpse of a dead woman holding her son in a dead embrace." Such a sad image to picture when the goal of these camps were to make it safer for these people. When the U.S.S Maine exploded these things were uncovered. These camps were a build up over time, finally beinn unrealed and people decided something should have been done and needed to change then. The effect of the U.S.S Maine exploding included things like these camps. Change needed to happen, and something needed to be done.

The Platt Amendment of 1902 was introduced after the Spanish-American War. The US agreed to withdraw its troops in Cuba if Cuba agreed to add the Platt Amendment to their constitution. The Amendment was very unfair to the Cubans. All the rules and laws were set to make the US more powerful. It gave US more control on pretty much all aspects of the Cubans. Rules were very negotiable and in favor of the United States, they easily could be adjusted more to side with the US.
"TO enable the United States to maintain the independence of CUba, and to protect the people thereof, as well as for its own defense, the Government of Cuba will sell or lease to the United States lands necessary for coaling or naval stations, at certain specified points, to be agreed in with the president of the United States. " This is the article VII of the Platt Amendment. This is very unfair, the cause of the amendment was very unfair laws put on the Cubans.

Some agreed and some disagreed on the idea of the annexation of Hawaii. Most all Hawaiians disagreed and thought Americans should not be allowed to take over land that meant so much to them. “We, the women of the Hawaiian Islands, for our families and the happiness of our homes, desire peace and political quiet, and we pray that man's greed for power and spoils shall not be allowed to disturb the otherwise happy life of these islands.” This describes a native woman's opinion on the annexation. In the context she describes the American men as if they are greedy for land and power. The effect of these Americans on others really portrayed important opinions on them. Just this woman explains them as greedy, not something to be proud of or want to be. The effect of the greedy Americans changed many thoughts of American
