THE IA PROMPTS: UNDERSTANDING & CHOOSING ONE

You must choose ONE of the IA prompts for your exhibition commentary.
All three objects must be linked to the same prompt.
These IA prompts apply for all examination sessions for the life of this guide—they do not change from session to session.
The chosen IA prompt must be used exactly as given; it must not be altered in any way.
35 seems to be a lot of IA prompts - but don't be overwhelmed - you don't need to memorise them, or even understand them all.
One way of making sense of them is focusing on the ones which relate to key concepts we cover in TOK - see the ones we've highlighted.
Another way, even simpler, is just to read through them and focus on the ones that you find interesting and engaging (and discard the ones you don't like).

TOK EXHIBITION DAY: AN OUTLINE

Many schools choose to have a public exhibition day, inviting students, teachers, and parents to the event, and getting you to present your commentary and objects.
You will not be assessed on how well you do this - so the first point is that you can enjoy this event!
Your exhibition is a great achievement, and you should be very proud of what you’ve created.
Presenting it in a successful way will draw on your skills in communication and collaboration, and can be highlighted when you apply to university (and beyond).

THE COMMENTARY: TIPS FOR SUCCESS

Introduce the object and its personal connection to the knower (but this is not an essay - so don’t write an essay-style introduction).
Offer a more developed unpacking of the object and its significance in relation to the prompt.
Give a justification for why the object was included - linking this clearly to the IA prompt, and focusing this part of the discussion on knowledge (and not be descriptive comments on the object).

Think in terms of ‘this object is interesting in exploring the prompt because…’ to justify an object’s inclusion.
Offer three different insights into the IA prompt would be a great way of structuring your commentary - remember, there doesn’t have to be a connection between your paragraphs.
See the themes as a starting point of your commentary; this should not be a long description of one of the themes.
You can support these insights with reference to thinkers, ideas, and real-world situations.
You don’t need to offer a specific conclusion to the prompt - it’s a prompt, not a question!

THE COMMENTARY: BASIC OUTLINE

950 words - but perhaps better to see it as 320 (ish) words per object.
Your commentaries for the objects do NOT need to be interlinked, and can have completely different contexts.
You will not be assessed on your understanding and knowledge of any part of the TOK course, but the IB recommend the context for your commentary is the core or an optional theme.
You can have different themes for each of your objects (as we’ve said, they don’t have to be interlinked).

TOK EXHIBITION DAY: MARKETING YOURSELF?

The exhibition represents tangible proof that you are a critical thinker - which is what many university courses are looking for when you apply.
Being able to refer to the ideas from your commentary, and how they manifest in the real world, is a great component in any personal statement.
You can also make reference to your abilities to communicate ideas in public - which combines really well with the skills you develop for the essay.
Make sure you get picture and videos of yourself, and your exhibition, so you have evidence of your achievement.

EXHIBITION OBJECTS: DON'Ts

Your three objects should NOT be created for the exhibition.
Choosing an object that is too general, or which symbolizes something else (a company logo to talk about capitalism, a lucky charm to talk about chance), weakens the link to the prompt.
Don’t choose an object that is difficult to exhibit - the format of an exhibition is deliberate.
Make sure you are engaged by the objects - so avoid ones that you don’t particularly want to talk about.

EXHIBITION OBJECTS: DOs

Your three objects should be based firmly in the real-world. Ideally, they should be found from the real world - rather than an image found online.
They should be specific rather than generic.
They should be personal and meaningful to you.
They should prompt a discussion about something significant.
Choosing objects that link to knowledge & the knower, indigenous societies, language, politics, religion, or technology will help you when you start planning and writing your commentary.

ASSESSMENT: THE FOUR SPECIFIC TARGETS

An excellent (9-10 / 10) exhibition displays the following characteristics:

ASSESSMENT TARGET 1 - INTERLINKING IDEAS

Clearly and explicitly explains the links between the objects and the IA prompt, and explicit references are made to the selected IA prompt.

ASSESSMENT TARGET 2 - JUSTIFYING IDEAS

There is a strong justification why the objects have been chosen for the exhibition.

ASSESSMENT TARGET 3 - USING EVIDENCE

All the points in the commentary are well-supported by evidence (personal experience, academic points, real-world situations, ideas of key thinkers).

ASSESSMENT TARGET 4 - IDENTIFYING A CLEAR REAL-WORLD CONTEXT

The exhibition clearly identifies three objects and their specific real-world context.

ASSESSMENT: THE OVERALL DRIVING QUESTION

The assessment of the TOK exhibition is underpinned by the following single driving question:

"Does the exhibition successfully show how TOK manifests in the world around us?"

You won't be assessed directly on this question, but overall, examiners should be give a clear 'yes' answer to this question, indicating that you've created a great exhibition commentary. It's also a useful test for you as you are creating your exhibition.
