Newtons first law states that an object in motion will stay in motion until acted upon by an outside force. When a basketball is shot at the hoop in this picture its motion does not change (not counting gravity) until a normal force from the hoop is applied to it changing its motion. That is why it displays newtons first law.;

Impulse is the change in momentum when an object is acted upon by a force. Impulse can be used to calculate momentum or the impact force of a collision. The cannon represents impulse because it changes its state of motion. When a fuse is lit it sets off an explosion that propels the cannonball through and out the cannon which causes a change in momentum.

This happens because of conservation of energy.
