Why do you think Charlie's identity as a basketball player's wife causes her to defend Davis, even though he confessed that he cheated on her?

Everyone sees Charlie through the lens of being Davis's wife, including herself. When they first experience the scandal coming out, that pushed Charlie and Davis closer together as it felt like an attack on their family. When details about Davis's involvement started to leak, I think that Charlie saw no way out other than to support him to get through this time. Robey and McIntosh discuss the importance of communication and honesty in healing a marriage after infidelity (2012). Clearly Davis lied about many of the details surrounding his infidelity and when Charlie heard the truth from Melina she realized that Davis is not the man she thought she married.

It seems like Charlie and Davis will separate. How do you think Charlie's identity will change when she is no longer a wife?

I think her identity will shift completely (in a good way)! I think that she will be able to find herself for who she truly is. She will no longer be seen by others through the lens of just being a wealthy basketball player's wife and instead will she her as resilient and hard-working. Gold writes about how divorce can be a “catalyst for positive change” instead of one just for negative changes in life (1996). I think this is going to be the case for Charlie.
