This lets the reader know that she is young. Also, if a person were to sit on top of the handlebars of a bike, society may perceive them as unaware and carefree, because they are not worried about the danger of doing that. In this quote, Rachel is also unaware and doesn’t think about the idea of getting hurt by the alcoholic. This illustrates how innocence and ignorance could be detrimental especially for younger individuals.
