-Common ingredients include: zinc chloride, chaparral (also known as creosote bush), and often bloodroot. The extract of bloodroot is called sanguinarine, a quaternary alkaloid which attacks and destroys living tissue and is also classified as an escharotic (dead tissue that sloughs off).
-Known for curing cancer and blood poisoning
-Western adaptations are less effective

Your body treats alkaloids as toxins, they all effect animals a little differently, three of the main effects are:
1.This prevents a bond between sugars. The inhibition would allow cAMP, a secondary messenger to breakdown- the storage of carbohydrates and fats is decreased.

ex. smokers stay thinner as it impacts on their cAMP system... gain weight after quitting...go back to your basic biology book to go over this system.

2. Effects nucleic acid & protein synthesis

certain alkaloids bind to nucleic acid which makes DNA susceptible to UV damage. The effects of binding of receptors, effects repair. Turns on genes to increase repair.

binds with RNA: affects transcription, r-RNA formation, can cause chain terminations in translation (which would affect the production of genes)

3. Affects membrane structure and cytoskeletal structure- cellular weakening or collapse as well as production of leaky membranes (could be how it collapses cancer cells)

4. Can affect nerve transmission / induction

5. It may alter energy dynamics- use of energy from detoxification (NADPH- metabolism)
