What were your thoughts when the dictatorship started to increase? Is this question about Venezuela? I assume yes. I was concerned when the economy of Venezuela went into a tailspin when oil prices fluctuated. I know the USA has supported many terrible right-wing dictatorships in South and Central America because they allow foreign companies to exploit local labor and resources, when left-wing dictatorships tend to nationalize their resources and keep foreigners out. So I was concerned that Maduro's failings as a leader and the economic crash would result in the US trying to take advantage of the situation to destabilize the regime by inflicting sanctions on the country that would hurt the poor and working people there, and that the US would try to start a war to overthrow the regime.

 Did you think that children using guns is correct? Children should have access to guns in very limited circumstances. Rural families with a tradition of hunting for food should be allowed to train their children in the safe handling of guns and their use. Otherwise guns should not be allowed for children. In the USA I am from Baltimore and many young people are murdered by children with guns or teenagers with guns. The police kill many young people they think MIGHT have a gun. I lost several middle school students to gun violence. I don't want children to use guns.

Do you think that Nito Cortizo is going to achieve his goal to make peace in Panama? I wish him success as he tries. It is not easy to accomplish. Rich, powerful countries like the USA have a challenge with gangs and gun violence. I hope Mr. Cortizo follows Japanese, European or Canadian style approaches and policies which are more successful than the USA policies about guns and violence.

 

 If you could travel to Venezuela when the dictatorship wasn't there would you stand up for your country? If I was a Venezuelan citizen and I thought there was going to be a civil war or a fight about the future of the country I would go back and take a side. If that happens in the USA I would return there and fight for the side I thought was right.

 What do you think is a good way to help Venezuela? Remove the sanctions and embargoes and allow Venezuela to trade for medicines and needed supplies. Help them diversify their economy with training and modernization programs funded through the UN. Give them funding so they can provide health care and education services that were very successful before but which the oil prices have harmed. Negotiate a non-aggression pact with the USA and open trading regionally to exports from Venezuela. Make sure that there are free and fair elections and that all candidates have an opportunity to compete and that voters are not threatened about their choices.

 Do you think that if we make peace a law people would follow it? Many would follow, but many would not. Too many people think that violence and conflict are the best ways to prove how tough they are and that is how you win arguments or change things. 

 If you lived in South Africa would you let your kids protect themself with weapons or guns? In Baltimore I had students who carried knives or guns to school because they walked in very dangerous neighborhoods. I think it is sad to say but yes, sometimes this is necessary. I would make sure they had proper training in how to avoid using weapons if at all possible, and how to use them safely if they needed to.

 Do you support children and shooting? I support children, but I do not support shooting. I do not support children shooting except in the circumstances I mentioned above.
