In Brown's lawsuit he claimed that black and white schools were not equal, and that violated the equal protection laws of the 14th amendment. The case was brought to the U.S. district court of Kansas, where it was decided that the segregation of public schools had a negative effect on children of color. Despite coming to that conclusion the court still upheld the separate but equal doctrine. Once his case and 4 other cases of racial inequality were brought to the supreme court in 1952, the justices would eventually, in 1955, rule the segregation of public schools unconstitutional.
