Did the audience at that time (500-400 BCE) think the same? We went in knowing the background and most of the story, but for someone who went in without this, is it plain to see? Tiresias' quote on page 17 seems like too much of a give away.

I'm still caught up on the fact that so many people are so reluctant to give Oedipus information. Tiresias refuses to tell Oedipus basically anything until the two get into a fight. Later, Jocasta pieces together the puzzle, but does not inform Oedipus and tries to convince him to leave the matter alone. Why is it that Oedipus, a king with much power, is being kept from this information? What is it that Tiresias and Jocasta fear will happen if they tell Oedipus?

I just don't get how someone would not be able to realize that right away or if he did, maybe he felt bad and wanted the attention away from him? I feel like it is spelled out by Jocasta and he just tries to rationalize or ignore his realizations. It is hard for me to grasp the fact that he simply does not want to admit to it or that he is truly so oblivious that it was him.

Was it Oedipus' fate to kill his father and marry his mother? I think that it says several times that he was told that he would kill his father, so i wonder then if it was just his fate that took over since that is what was believed during that time. Oedipus seemed genuinely concerned about being told that, but in the end he found out that it all was true. Also, I was wondering if his father deserved to die? King Laius started the curse and created all of the problems but it was transferred onto Oedipus so I wonder if it was Laius' fault that he died, like his own fate?

Oedipus was smart, he was he only one to solve the sphinx’s riddle; however, he could not figure out that he was his father’s murderer and his mother’s current husband. Was Oedipus just in denial? She was aware of the prophecy and her marriage to Laius appeared to be happy, so why was she able to marry again so easily? And why was this an easier solution to their loss of a king rather than making Creon the ruler? It slightly reminds me of Hamlet, where we see no remorse over her loss of her husband. I also wonder if she was ever aware of how despicable of a person Laius actually was, or if she was as blind to his actions as she is to the fulfillment of the prophecy (and as everyone else is).

I get that it was more so that the curse is what caused Oedipus to kill his father, but why did he end up marrying his mother and also having kids with her? I feel like somewhere down the line Merope and Polybus knew who his real parents were or at least someone did so they could have prevented it from happening and making the situation this worse. So why does Oedipus take on the curse when really he had no part in what his father did?

I find it commendable that Sophocles continues to live today through his playwrights--even though they are far from relatable in modern-day circumstances. The sweep of Christianity centuries later seemed powerful enough to snuff such opposing beliefs as that of gods and mythology, so how were Sophocles' stories spread through this revolution? How were these brought to us and why?

When are people fulfilling their fate, and when are their actions going off the tracks? We never find out Jocasta's fate or story. Was she a pollutant because of leaving her son. Did the gods really consider what she did to be wrong?
