Ingrid Escamilla (TW)

The case of Ingrid Escamilla is just one of the thousands of femicides that have occurred in Mexico. At just 25 years of age, her partner murdered her after an altercation of domestic abuse. He went as far as skinning her body and leaving her unrecognizable. This case brought light to the reality in which women in Mexico live in. Men have the power to treat women as they'd like and not get the punishment they deserve for it. After the awakening women had, her murderer was taken in and sentenced to time in prison but in most cases, no fair trial is met. Men in Latin-American societies are given the upper hand when it comes to the law. Gender treatment is disproportionate and is why women are recognizing that it was the imbedded machismo that has allowed for this to continue on.

Machismo: Where it begins.

I wanted to use this week to bring light to an issue not commonly spoken about in our day to day lives. Although in American culture we are not manipulated as deeply into this form of thinking, to some degree toxic masculinity still revolves around us. In countless cultures and communities, and in this case Mexico, we see the years of silence coming to an end in regards to machismo and femicide. Women are finally finding the strength to speak up about the experiences they've had in which men feel entitled to have them. Machismo in itself is a form of power men hold over women and their bodies. Gender in this case is the factor that allows men to control them for their own satisfaction and not being blamed for domestic violence and in tragedies like femicide.

Femicide: Will it ever end?

As an interactive piece, I found this video in which we hear about other testimonies and experiences women go through everyday in Mexico. It's hard to see light at the end of the tunnel especially for machista nations like these to begin to recognize the harm they've done to women but this is a good start. I wanted those who felt comfortable, to let us know in the comments about a personal experience as a woman you may have had yourself in which men sexualized or simply made you feel uncomfortable being female in a male world. To allies, what can you take in from something I've mentioned or if you've seen this type of gender disparity, how did it make you feel. Overall, I'd like to bring awareness to something happening in my community but also recognize its an ongoing struggle for women everywhere to feel safe walking on the street and not have this in the back of their minds.
