The Editor, Smethwick

Estrick Echo, Birmingham
Estrick. B32 7AD
EK4 3KT. 30th March 2020

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to you because I have recently come a comment in your newsletter regarding the issue of plastic bags, and whether we should be charged for the by supermarkets and other stores.

In this matter I have to disagree with the latest entry. Charging for bags will slow down the amount of bags being used. We take so many bags and then they end up in the bin or being littered on the streets. We all know plastic is bad for the environment. We all have to do our part to save the planet that we all need and live on.

Charging for bags will encourage customers to keep reusing their old bags. It has been found since this new scheme has been introduced the use of bags is down by 90%. So the new scheme is working, just like all new things being created it takes a while catch on. But these figures show that the public are warming up to the idea.

I have myself embraced the new change by buying bigger and stronger bags for my shopping trips. It makes all the difference, because you can go home with less bags and the new bags last longer. Also when your bag gets old or damaged they replace them free of charge.
I think I am one out of many people who may have an opinion on this matter, so I would like for you to publish my letter and get others writing in too.
Thank you for reading my letter.
Yours Faithfully
Joanna Austin
J. Austin.

Diary entry. 30th March 20

Dear Diary,
Well its nearly bedtime and I thought I'll let you know about my day. Today was my first day at B.A.E.S. The course I am taking is Level 2 English Functional skills. Honestly I was abit embarrassed to go back to school for learning as I am an adult. But when I walked an saw my class mates. I thought wow there is nothing to be ashamed of because we are all here to learn better ourselves. So that came with a sigh of relief. I have a wonderful tutor and her name is Julie. At first I was nervous about joining her class because I started abit later than everyone else. But Julie and the other ladies made me feel very welcome. Incredibly nice to me.

I have learnt that I had nothing to worry about because after an hour or so I felt really comfortable. Some of the things we discussed I remember from school and some things are new to me. So I very glad I joined the course.
For next lesson I will do some research on the topics I didn't understand to get more familiar with them.
Very excited for next lesson and getting to know all of the ladies and Julie too. 😁.
Remember always think positive
Love Jo.
