Affordability by Design
1. What are the 3 important concepts used by nARCHITECTS for designing urban housing like Carmel Place mentioned in the podcast?
- One of the ways to make a 300 ft2
feel like 500ft2 is by shrinking invisible architectural elements
- Another one is sharing, sharing one small common area in a precise, if kitchen equipment is shared it a bigger kitchen isn’t needed
- Transforming, a table or a desk which can be folded up and turn into a wall
2. What do they mean by affordability when talking about design?
Affordable by design is a concept of reducing unit size. It is important to increase the quality of the spaces, about re-thinking space and making sure that it’s a fit for the family life. It's about a floor plan that allows it to grow into one bedroom. With things like robotic furniture and on- demand storage, still down into what the person living there wants.
You are able to say to say I want that extra kitchen in the shared space but I don't necessarily have to pay for it in my personal unit and so it affords more choice in that way
3. What examples are given for transforming living space?
Flexible furniture, imagine if you could have something that is flexible that comes into your space that can help expand space but also can fold up into a living room, depending on what is needed. The flexible walls will allow the apartment to evolve and fit the needs.
Off-demand storage, which means storing some of the things that are not used on a daily basis can be stored in a cheaper square footage. And all of this with robotic equipment.
4. What are your opinions about co-living?
Co- living is a shared living experience focused on convenience and great spaces and a really strong sense of community. There is no need to find roommates and it is affordable. In my opinion co-living is an affordable and smart way to live. This type of housing can adjust to the needs of the habitant. If an expanded kitchen is what the habitant desires then it can be made. It is also a great way of interacting with other people, there is no need to find roommates or someone to share the space with because lots of people are in the same situation. Co-living is also a great way to save money and at the same time enjoy a quality space. If I would have to choose a place to live in I would lean to co-living because I think it is a great lifestyle.

I think is a good idea because you can have fun, and it will not be that difficult to manage the house since you have more people. There’s not a problem with concentration since you can have a room for yourself. Co-living is actually much cheaper than living on your own. You could also co-live with the persons on your office, like that it will be easier to work ad to organize

What are the 3 important concepts used by nARCHITECTS for designing urban housing like Carmel Place mentioned in the podcast?

The Shrinking of invisible architectural elements is a way to make a 300 square feet room feel like a 1500 square feet one. Another concept is sharing, thus, for instance if you share kitchen equipment you don’t need as bigger kitchen anymore. The last design concept is transforming.

What do they mean by affordability when talking about design?

Affordability at design is the concept of reducing units size; critical for enhancing affordability. I can
deduce is that the production of affordable housing is an architectural, urban, and economic design challenge. It includes issues of design, social equity, finance, equity
options and building codes and zoning. Affordable housing should address the housing needs of the lower or middle income households. Affordability in design is important to increase the quality of the spaces; making sure that is a fit for families households.

What examples are given for transforming living space?

One of the examples is to envision a table or a desk that you could fold up and turn into a wall.

What are your opinions about co-living?

I believe that co-living is an antidote to isolation (taking in count that lots of people experience loneliness); people all around the world are seeking for community. This intentional neighborhood where people know each other and look after one another is helpful to enhance more social interactions between individuals. Furthermore, co-living has a an increasing amount of advantages such as the economical advantages of sharing resources with other community members. Sharing tasks and chores like cooking, providing childcare, and driving, can offer savings in both time and money. Thus, I believe that co-living is very efficient and product way of lifestyle.

Tamera video:
1. In the aspect of water she says that they’ve created a model for a decentralised water management systems; which is their water retention. She announces that it is a way to fight the issue of desertification.
2. The second area is energy and she remarks that their village should be
empowered to produce the energy they need locally. Also, that its possible (in the land of Portugal) with sun, biogas and in some areas with wind energy.
3. Dregger claims its the same with the food, every region would be empowered to produce the food. A lot of it is dependant on the global market and on the rising of food prices. In an organic way, in a way that heals the landscape from destruction.
4. Finally the 4th area is the community building. She states that people lost the ability to live together in peace. So, they created tools were people can communicate in a way that they create truth and trust among each other rather than hatred, jealousy and fights. They can solve the war between people.
Teopantli Kalpulli, is a beautiful and historical ecovillage in Jalisco, Mexico (near my city). On 70 acres of land, 150 community members live. The village bases most of their practices on Nahuatl and Huichol traditions of natural building and sacred practice.
