This semester I have valued the importance of making time for community circles. I have learned that this practice helps with restorative ideas through open discussion and allocating time for both speaking and listening. The community circle has allowed me to be grateful for my Cohort and build a deeper trust and support within us. I enjoyed the book, "Troublemakers," which allowed me to be reminded that there is much more to a student, and I will re-read it again. Overall, I enjoyed this class and what we learned. Although things are common sense and things we are aware we shouldn't be doing. I think there are so many other things we learn that open our eyes to understanding new situations. Or reflecting on our own ideas and biases to handle different situations. I appreciate the time you take to share your own personal experiences and beliefs to help guide us into what is happening in the classroom. Om, I feel it's so powerful to hear from you. I really liked the way this class is set up, and I think it allows for really positive, profound discussions. First off, starting with a community circle gets us all to open up and helps us build our bonds with each other. I feel like I learned so much about everyone here through our community circles. Also, there were times when I felt completely alone in something, and then I’d hear that several other people were going through the same thing. That alone helped immensely. That community circle set us up to have great discussions about the readings. I love how we did these in groups because we could get our ideas in order and bounce off in discussion. It would help us apply what we read to each other, our lives, and our placements, making the most out of the material. In all, I think this was a wonderfully set up class that made the acquiring of knowledge feel seamless. It did well at painting the big picture for us to feel like what restorative and community forward practices feel like, so that we can implement this as teachers. -Andrea L.

In all, I think this course was insightful into the many ways one can "manage" their classroom. we took it from manageing students to working together with students to create a safe and productive classroom. The community circles helped me feel closer to my cohort and learn about them over topics that dont always come up with everyone. Overall, I feel closer this class has given me thigns to think about for my own classroom and has given me tools/resources to incooperate openess and collaboration. I can see the effort that was put into this class, I see your hard work Sandra and for that I am very grateful to have you. You have worked hard for us and we appreciate the effort taken to show us how to run our classrooms just as youve ran yours here. We learned how to value community, love, and kindness in our classroom all through your teachings.

Semester Reflection - Marisol

This semester I've learned more of the value of creating a community in the classroom. Not just in our placements and future classrooms, but also amongst us, as peers and friends. The community circle was very impactful because it gave us all an opportunity to talk about our experiences, past and present and to be able to relate to one another; especially in knowing that not one of us is struggling alone during this rough time. The readings and classwork also helped me to prepare for next semester and when I start teaching myself. May of the readings have given my ideas of different approaches I could take, while also keeping an open mind and knowing that a certain model will not work for all groups of students and that is okay. The biggest takeaway that I've had from this class this semester is that we must stay flexible and constantly adapt to our classroom environment. The structure of the class also showed that having a predictable workflow helps us (and our students) stay calm and know what to expect. Although we still might have a handful of kids who will ask every day what we are doing, this will keep the majority of students on task, and they will be able to guide each other as well.

We learned about community circles A LOT this semester. We also learned a few other things we can do to build community in our classrooms, but I am glad I have had the opportunity to see more stuff outside of this class, because I never would have known them if not for other experiences. Overall, I think community circles are great for discussions and bonding with students. I think I have a better understanding of their purpose and what other restorative practices I can use with my future students. I also like the book we read because it gave me relatable examples that connect to my placement, so I think it was a direct example of how the things we talked about in this class should be used and in what situations they work best.

This semester has shown me so much and has taught me many ways to create a classroom where students feel safe. I am very grateful to have been a part of community circles, and I have learned so much about my classmates. It provided us with a space to talk about our feelings, worries, or positive experiences, and I think creating a space like that is so valuable. It's something I would definitely implement in my classroom. I have also learned a lot of restorative justice and practices to implement in the future to change the way most things have been done for a long time, which have gone unchecked. Overall, I'm grateful to have been able to be a part of this community and learn from you, Sandra!

This course has really allowed me to see the importance of slowing down and building relationships in the classrooms. Engaging in restorative practices has so many benefits that I was able to better understand through this course. I also did enjoy the readings, they helped to better illustrate the implementation of restorative practices. I feel like whenever we reflect on our own experiences, if we didn't engage in restorative practices it can be really difficult to imagine how we will implement them. I also enjoyed reading Troublemakers, I felt like it made me stop to think how I describe students in my placement classroom and how I interact with them. I have also started to become more aware of how teachers talk about students in the classroom and what they are doing to help students learn. As I was saying in our community circle, I have also really enjoyed the relationships we have built in the classroom and the support system we have created. -Karla

I have enjoyed this course because I think that the discussions that we've had have been helpful, and I could apply them to my placement. Learning about restorative practices has been on the back of my mind throughout this semester, as I am placed in a third-grade classroom where the students next door are often perceived as troublemakers. I really enjoyed being able to have this knowledge that allowed me to see how some teachers do not approach students the way that they should. I am also thankful for the community circles because I think that it was a great way to start the week by grounding and feeling heard and seen. Thank you, Sandra for your time that you have put into this course and for fostering an environment where we could share how we felt.

I think this semester I have learned a great deal about restorative practices and how to navigate emotions, both my students’ and my peers’. Before this class, I often felt unsure about how to respond when someone was upset, whether it was a student dealing with something at home or frustrated because their project was ruined. The community circles we participated in gave me ideas for how to deal with these situations, either as a whole class or individually.

I have truly taken in everything that was taught and discussed. I also appreciate how honest and open everyone was throughout the semester. It created a space where we could learn not only strategies, but also understanding and empathy for one another.

Adding to that, the classroom management lessons were incredibly valuable. I have already applied some of these strategies in my placement and have seen the positive impact they can have. Thank you for all the great practices and ideas:)

My biggest takeaway from this course is not only restorative practices and putting yourselves in the shoes of the students but also ensuring we work together WITH them. It reminds me of the chart we saw a few weeks ago—if we work “to” and not “with” it will create a punitive classroom. Being restorative doesn’t mean being super lenient or too nice, it’s also about setting rules and respectful guidelines with the students. Another main takeaway is how community circles can be super effective to create special bonds and meaningful memories in the classroom. Super grateful for having and being in the cohort and for you Sandra. Gracias!

This semester has allowed me to learn a lot about restorative practices and how to implement them into the classroom. One of the ways I have enjoyed implementing restorative practices is through community circles. Doing community circles at the beginning of every class has been beneficial and heartwarming. This allowed me to see how it's very efficient for students when sharing how they feel or goals that they might have because it helped me a lot in reflecting about myself. As well, I have learned a lot about my peers and have strengthen that trust and relationships which has helped a lot throughout other classes. It feels nice to know that most of the time we are going through the same things, so we are able to support one another if necessary. Lastly, I enjoyed getting to read "Troublemakers" it was such a good book that allowed me to see different perspectives on the behaviors of students and how to approach them. I really enjoyed this class. This class put a lot into perspective when it comes to classroom management. I have a great experience in Intern 2, and I have seen how the discussions we have in class are reflected in my placement. I have gained insight into both the teachers' and students' perspectives from this course. I learned from the class readings and the book "Troublemakers" the importance of building community among students, and we have seen great examples, such as community circles and intentional conversations with students. A big takeaway I take from this class is that as teachers, we create a home in the classroom where students feel comfortable sharing and where students know about empathy. I appreciate this class.

This course overall has taught me about the importance of communication with students. You have to hear students out and acknowledge that there is a deeper issue rather than just shutting them down with a quick punishment. I have enjoyed learning about restorative practices because it focuses on helping students regulate their emotions and behaviors. It has also taught me to have more patience and empathy when interacting with students and other peers. Thank you Sandra, for showing us real examples of restorative practices in the classroom. For example, the community circles and the learning circles, and your kindness. I appreciated seeing these practices in the classroom because it has created a more relaxed environment. Also huge thank you to the the rest of the cohort as well, because those talks in the morning community circle have brought joy to me this past semester.
