Western movies all follow storylines that contain similar characters, but that's not all, they also share multiple visual and editing techniques. These two shots both play on that, its a dark shot whilst the characters speak of something that completes that mood. In the two shots they use open fields in a similar manner; in which they use them to enhance a feeling. In True Grit it use it to show expense by showing the two parties facing each other in a battle.
