For many years, attempts have been made to find acceptable ways to prevent smallpox. It has long been known that a person who survived after this disease developed immunity, and he would not get sick again.
A peasant woman Sarah Nelmes infected with cowpox, appeared on the hand a few pustules. May 14, 1796 their contents I rubbed into a scratch on the body of eight-year-old James Phipps . The boy had a slight malaise, which passed in a few days. A month and a half later, James Phipps was vaccinated human smallpox, but the disease has not developed. A few months later, the second inoculation of smallpox was made, five years later — the third, with similar results.
