France participated in costly wars throughout the 1700s

The country was pushed into bankruptcy

King Louis XVI raised taxes to solve the economic problem

The French monarchy had very expensive lifestyle, Versailles palace would have cost about 2 billion dollars

The 3rd estate was very angry at the king and the monarchy for raising taxes and having a very expensive lifestyle.

This anger would help spark the revolution and would fuel the violence during the revolution.

These conditions hurt wheat storage and harvests

Poor harvests caused bread and flour prices to skyrocket

Working-class french citizens couldn't get food because of the high prices

People started getting mad at King Louis XVI for not solving the food crisis

This eventually lead to the imprisonment of King Louis XVI and his family

This bread shortage helped many citizens understand the need for a revolution and helped expand the ideals of the revolution

French Population was divided into 3 estates

Each Estate had different rights

1st Estate was 0.5% of the population and was made up of Priests and Bishops 

2nd Estate was 1.5% of the population and made up of French Nobility

3rd estate was 98% of the population and made up of normal working-class people like merchants and workers

The 3rd estate grew angry that they were taxed the most of the 3 estates

the 3rd estate was also angry because they had little representation in government

This anger would eventually lead to the 3rd estate creating the National Assembly which would cause the outbreak of revolution
