After the passing of my great grandmother, my mom wanted to name her daughter after her as homage to her life and legacy.

My mom loved the name Angelique, so she decided my grandmother's name, Natalie, would be my middle name. However, "Angelique Natalie" sounded off to her. She wanted to honor our Italian roots and help the name flow well, so she chose "Natalia"; making my full name Angelique Natalia Scott.

Why do I go by "Angel"? Why would I go by this when I have such a beautiful name? When I was born, my parents would hold me and say, "My little Angel," and I would almost always coo in response. My lullaby as a baby was "Angel Baby". My mom also jokes that I am a "Christmas Angel" because of the meanings of my first and middle names. To this day, the name Angel reminds me of the love my parents have for me.

Growing up in a Title I school with a primarily Hispanic population, my nickname was rather common, but only among boys. I was the only girl named Angel in the school. People teased me all the time for having a "boy name", and I never understood why this was such a bad thing.

As I got older, people teased me for "Angel" because they often associated it with a stripper name. While people made these jokes in good humor, I couldn't help but feel ashamed of my name sometimes.

I no longer care what impressions my name gives people. I am always reminded of the people who helped influence my parents, my upbringings, my heritage, and my family. I love my name, nickname and birth.
