What is the strategy?

- Pip and rip (praise in public, recognise in private)

When would you use it to support pupil behaviour?/ How does it work?

- Daily in lessons, praising good work/ focusing/ keeping on task. Recognising disruptive behaviour but acknowledging the issue when the time is right.

What is the impact?

- Gives the children time to reflect on their behaviour before speaking to them. Ask questions like why did you think it was appropriate to behave this way? How does it make you feel? What are you going to do better next time?

- Not singling out/ making the disruptive behaviour the centre of attention.

- Visual aids around the classroom about expected behaviour - such as reminders to be respectful when someone is talking, hands up to share thoughts or ask questions

A game played approx 3 times a week for 10 minutes in any lesson. There are 4 rules; including - be polite, only get out of seat with permission and follow directions. Children are working in teams/ tables and for each broken rule a negative point is given. The winning team (least neg points) then get a positive reinforcement (eg 5 minutes of free time, House points, sticker)

It is used in any lesson, 3 times a week, for 10 minutes. As students master the game the time is extended.

Impact: aim is to improve behaviour

Critic:

EEF research shows there is limited impact on behaviour.

Concerns of being negative reinforcement rather than positive

Concerns could create negative relationships between the children.

Fewer rules for all the time could work better and be consistent.

Good concept that could be tweaked to positively reinforce behaviour rather than more "poor behaviour"

Video appeared quite dated (research says brought in in 1969 in the US). However, EEF report from 2018 showed it was a technique was still being used.

Where: originated in the US, but brought to the UK - EEF looked at it in Manchester, Yorkshire, Midland.
