This building is important because for hundreds of years it has been the center of the Catholic Church and home to the Pope. It is a place where a lot of Renaissance art is stored and can be seen by visitors. Additionally, the Basilica conceals the tombs of Saint Peter and the succeeding Popes.

Important story
A unique story is that this colossal work of art we get to admire today, actually is a successor! Yes, almost 1700 years ago, Emperor Constantine - first to accept Christianity as his religion, is credited for the original building. However, a thousand years later, the church was in a bad state, and Pope Julius II made the tough call to have it torn down and rebuilt.
