Post #1 (November 1, 2018) - - The Great Recession

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/12/opinion/botching-the-great-recession.html
This article by Paul Krugman points out that it has been 10 years since the recession and that we usually reflect after a period of time. He quickly recaps what went on and who can be held responsible, but sadly won't admit to it. He explained the aftermath and how we suffered far longer than we should have.

This article reminds me of our lecture we had about the recession. I remember hearing about how certain people gained wealth from this opposed to the majority that took a big loss. He talks in this article about how people did not want to admit to this being their fault and republicans would do anything to stop the recovery of the economy and tried to avoid tax cuts for the rich for their own benefit.

Post #2 (November 6, 2018) - - Trade and Neoliberalism

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/23/opinion/trade-trump-eu-juncker.html
Presient Trump stated that what Europeans do to us in trade is "bad". The U.S and Europe don't compete in trade but in fact they are partnered which makes Trump's statement controversial. The concept of Neoliberalism is mentioned as it created economic competition for all.

In lecture we have discussed the concept of Neoliberalism. It is known to be "religious faith in the market" (Mudge 2008). It allows for a free market, and consequent state restructuring. The article mentions how states should not be the ones in favor of neoliberalism, but rather businesses and such should be.

Post #3 (November 10, 2018) -- Foreign Direct Investment

This rivalry is happening in Panama and the actions of China are upsetting to the US. They do not think they have Panama's best interest in mind but rather their own. Panama is willing to let foreign direct investment enter from both US and China but they do say they will be hesitant.

Foreign direct investment is something that has stuck with me from this class. According to lecture, FDI is "when and individual or firm acquires controlling interest in productive assets in another country" (Bionigen 1). This would mean that Panama is interest in foreign ownership of stocks and bonds from both those countries.

There is a map attached that shows child growth rates and indicates health improving.

This relates to class because we have spoken about the UN. Specifically, we had to pick a goal to talk about in the midterm. When researching all these goals, I always thought it was a far shot to achieve all these by 2030. There is so much to be done when trying to accomplish such a big goal. Ending malnutrition in Africa seems like it will not be met although they are making progress.
