Ever since it was built, the tank leaked the substance and made strange noises when filled. The company, instead of replacing the tank, deiced to continue using it, as it would be ultimately cheaper. This incident was preventable since warning signs and been seen since it was constructed, by only filling it with the right amount of molasses, repairing it, or making sure the right addition is made to ensure that it was built sturdy.No architects or engineers were ever consulted during the construction, and many corners were cut in order to complete the tank before the molasses lost its value due to prohibition. During the winter the St Lawrence River would freeze up completely leaving its trade route cut off until the spring. The Quebec Bridge was feverishly created to subside the issue. However, it was on August 29, 1907, that a collapse happened. After the first failure, construction on a new bridge spearheaded by the government was made. Yet again, this bridge collapsed.
