The Oregon Trail stretched from Missouri to Oregon. Many missionaries crossed the Oregon Trail such as Marcus and Narcissa Whitman to spread Catholicism in the west. People in the East learned a lot from the missionaries reports about the west and it increased westward expansion.
https://youtu.be/jXjsZc1my1o

When Mexico became independent, it was eager for more trade with other regions. William Becknell realized he could make a profit if he traded with New Mexicans in Santa Fe. Many other settlers crossed the same trail he did named the Santa Fe Trail and it became a popular trade route when Becknell came back with so much gold and silver.

The Mormons were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The Mormons lived in close communities and were very hard workers. The journey was was 1300 miles. In 1847, about 1,600 Mormons followed part of the Oregon Trail to Utah. There they built a new settlement by the Great Salt Lake. They had to build many structures since Utah had very little water.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8exAQ1zyA8

http://www.nativeamerican.co.uk/oregontrail.jpg

These men set traps to collect animal fur for the hats that were in fashion during the early 1800's. A system created by William Henry Ashley called the rendezvous system brought trappers together in which they traded furs. In 1840, fashion changed as silk hats became popular instead of the once popular fur hats. This brought an end to the fur trade as it eventually died out.
Image from: http://shelledy.mesa.k12.co.us/staff/computerlab/images/W_CO_History6_Mountain_Men.jpg

Jedediah Smith was a mountain man who was traveling through the Rocky Mountains when a grizzly bear attacked him and bit off the top of his head, part of his face, and part of his ear. Instead of wanting to give up his life and being hopeless about the situation, he told his friends exactly what to do, where to stitch up and pour fresh water on to clean up. He showed confidence and bravery and calm even when such a traumatic event took place.
