Many missionaries crossed the Oregon Trail such as Marcus and Narcissa Whitman to spread Catholicism in the west. People in the East learned a lot from the missionaries reports about the west and it increased westward expansion.

William Becknell realized he could make a profit if he traded with New Mexicans in Santa Fe. The Mormons lived in close communities and were very hard workers. The journey was was 1300 miles. In 1847, about 1,600 Mormons followed part of the Oregon Trail to Utah. There they built a new settlement by the Great Salt Lake.  They had to build many structures since Utah had very little water.

A system created by William Henry Ashley called the rendezvous system brought trappers together in which they traded furs. In 1840, fashion changed as silk hats became popular instead of the once popular fur hats. This brought an end to the fur trade  as it eventually died out.
