Shortly before one of the most critical meetings in the dispute between the Prime Minister and the coal owners, Joynson Hicks rushed to the bedside of Queen Elizabeth l (The duchess at the time) to witness her birthing the new Queen Elizabeth ll. She had a C-Section which reduced the chances of her having a boy in the future. The baby was no sooner baptized than an active debate began in the press about how she should, and would, be brought up. The issue became a concern especially to women writers of the popular magazines, where prejudice and preference tended to merge with the little evidence that was available about what actually went on.

The duchess felt that if the baby wore frilly stuff, the public would view it as femininity, not adornment. She then chose to dress her children in cotton, which symbolized cleanliness and purity, not wealth. She wanted simplicity. This gave the public a sense of a simple upbringing. The princess lived in a townhouse in New York, with her family, and had a luxury suite (For a baby) at the top of the house. One of the rules i found strange was that she had so many toys, but could only play with one at a time. She grew up half-royal and spent the first year of her life with either her full royal grandparents or non-royal grandparents, both of which lived in Scotland, whilst her parents went and stayed with relatives while travelling all over the world.

Her parents were basically strangers because when they'd come back after six months of being gone they didn't recognize her because she grew up so fast. Fasting forward a bit, when she was about 2 or 3, the public caught word that the princess wasn't acting like a princess, acting more mischievous then ever. But that news suddenly got overshadowed by the news that the King was ill and has to be on bed-rest for the next few months. That didn't stop the princess from spending her mornings before school with him, trying to lift his spirits, and once he recovered the public believed she was the reason he recovered so quickly. On her 4th birthday, the King got her a pony, thanking her for helping him when he was ill.

The arrival of Princess Margaret had several effects. The first effect was that it reinforced public awareness of her sister's (Elizabeth) position in the line for the throne. The second effect was that it lowered the possibility of having a boy in the future. Another effect was that the Kings health remained uncertain after recovering from his fatal illness.
