Dear Reader,

If you are someone who either doesn’t live in New York City or hasn’t spent much time there, Holden’s adventure through New York can seem confusing and complicated. So we’ve decided to make his journey a little more clear. We’ll show every (real) place that Holden visits, where they are in comparison to each other, and images of what that place looked like in the early 1950s and what it looks like now. We also decided to share how that place changed because of its mention in The Catcher in the Rye and some additional fictional pieces to give you a sense of what life was like in New York City in 1951.

From,

Ryan Sacramone and Ronald DeMyers.

This piece was written to give you some background on what Holden’s New York looked like. New York City in 1951 was a bustling metropolis of music and business. It was home to three of the biggest record labels in the country and people came from miles around to try their luck in the big apple. You could see women in poodle skirts, or men with giant sideburns. You could see kids playing in the streets with the newly invented hula hoop, or playing games like “kick the can”. It wasn’t all fun and games though, the city was also home to over 100,000 homeless people, many of whom were mentally challenged due to major cutbacks in physic ward funding. Prostitution was also extremely common in New York and many bars had “extra entertainment” in the back if requested.
