Artifacts:

Case Study: Rana

Kids Have Stress Too

Project Risk Factors & Teratogens – “Chemical Valley” Research

Science of Babies

Courses:

ECED-3038: Child Development

ECED-1053: Child Development

ECED-1075: Child development

ECED-1075 :Child development 0-3 yrs

Reflection:

All these artifacts, my Rana case study, Kids Have Stress Too report, and teratogen project from the "Chemical Valley" scenario, all combined demonstrate my thorough understanding of child development across all domains. Through the examination of real-case case studies and research-based observations, I was able to identify factors affecting children's cognitive, emotional, and physical development.

One of the main revelations was learning how prenatal exposures and environmental conditions can shape a child's trajectory. In the "Chemical Valley" project, I explored how toxins impact prenatal and postnatal development. The Rana case study prompted me to analyze and apply developmental theories, while the "Kids Have Stress Too" assignment specialized in emotional regulation and resilience.

These experiences have shown me how to consider children as complete persons, shaped by both their inner capacities and external worlds. I will carry this vision with me to foster each child's unique growth.

This assignment explores the importance of brain development in the first three years of life. I reflected on how secure attachments, a nurturing environment, and sensitive periods all play a big role in helping babies grow and learn. Drawing on the work of Ainsworth (1969), Kolb & Gibb (2011), and Greenough et al. (1987), I learned that caregivers and educators have the power to shape brain development through positive, consistent, and loving interactions. This helped me understand the importance of my role in supporting every child’s development from the very beginning.

In Toddler Play Observation, I examined children's play based on ELECT and HDLH and developed a challenging indoor obstacle course activity. Kindergarten Dramatic Play Plan and Work Task on Self-Regulation also reflect my understanding of planning that is suitable to the age, inclusive, and inquiry-based.

I also learned about the importance of quality from my Envisioning Quality reflection, where I was a vocal supporter of a provincial curriculum framework in an effort to ensure uniform and equitable early learning for Ontario.

These artifacts demonstrate that I use play as the vehicle of learning, weave curriculum expectations through rich activities, and create caring environments that foster curiosity, independence, and belonging.

This photo shows a display wall filled with children’s artwork in our classroom, which we hang up together every day. At first, I saw art as just a fun activity, but after reading Brown and Grigg (2017), I realized it’s a powerful way children express their thoughts and feelings. It reminded me that creativity is a form of voice, especially for kids who may not yet speak English. Displaying their work builds confidence and shows them their ideas matter. This experience has helped me grow as an educator who listens more closely and values different ways children express themselves.

Artifacts:

3038 Reflections (Weeks 1–5)

Residential Schools in Canada Reflection

Poor No More Documentary Analysis

Elected official Letter (May 2025 )

Self- assessment

Courses:

ECED-3038: Child development

ECED-3003: Soci canadian Families Change& Diversity

ECED-3040: Elected official Letter

FLDP-1038 : Field Seminar

Reflection:

With my residential school project, the "Poor No More" analysis, and trauma-informed practice reflection, I had developed my voice as a child and family advocate. These assignments taught me that good advocacy begins from a position of systemic barriers, historical injustices, and the requirement for culturally responsive intervention.

The residential school reflection spoke to me, reminding me that Indigenous people continue to experience trauma today. My personal reflections on trauma and mental health in the early years confirmed my belief of creating safe, welcoming spaces. The "Poor No More" activity made economic inequality clear and our position as ECEs for eliminating better working conditions and policies for supporting educators and families. It generally had me questioning the world around me.

These experiences have allowed me to use my voice in the classroom and wider community to advocate for child-centered practice, social justice, and equity.

Our letter to Minister Calandra was part of our advocacy for more multicultural inclusive classrooms in early childhood education. As a group, we highlighted the real challenges educators and children face due to language and cultural differences and offered meaningful solutions. This topic is very important to me because I believe every child deserves to feel seen, heard, and valued. Writing this letter helped me understand how advocacy can be a powerful tool for change. It also gave me more confidence in using my voice as a future RECE to support equity and inclusion.

Completing this self assessment helped me realize how much I rely on reflection to grow as an educator. I often think back on my experiences with children and learn from both what went well and what could have gone better. I have started using small tools like note taking and want to try formal models like Gibbs' Cycle to improve my critical thinking. This assignment also showed me the value of listening to others whether it is families, coworkers, or children to see things from different perspectives. Reflecting regularly even in small ways helps me feel more confident, open minded, and prepared in my role.

The following e Portfolio reflects on the information I have learned in my semesters in the Early Childhood Education program.

My name is Asiya Kashif and this e-portfolio showcases my education, skills and experiences as a Fast Track Early Childhood Education (ECE) student at Fanshawe College. It reflects why I am into early learning and in support of growth of children through meaningful engaging experiences.

For over six years, I have been working with children and in 2018 I had finished the Early Childhood Assistant (ECA) course in Canada. During my ECA training, I did placements with toddlers and preschoolers and I got lots of hands-on experience of creating inclusive environments, supporting children to play based learning and strong relationships with children and families. And these experiences helped me understand better what diverse children need and drilled home the importance of making sure that this learning environment is safe, supportive and engaging. I have worked with children from 18 months old therefore, from kindergarten, this has further increased my confidence and skills as an educator since then. My experience with children of all ages has reinforced my desire to assist children in their growth and learning, and in this process I have been able to enhance my teaching skills with the ability to meet the unique needs of my students.

I chose to go for this ECE program due to my constant aspiration of making children grow, learn, and become confident. The program has helped me understand more deeply the stages of development for children, how they learn, and the fundamental parts of creating fun yet safe learning environments that are inclusive. It has given me not only the knowledge of what is needed to be successful in early childhood education, but also practical skills. Additionally, the courses I have taken also introduced me to other ways of teaching that focus on play based learning, promoting social and emotional well being and ways to include families in their children’s development.

I am looking to continue on my learning journey and apply the things that I have learnt as I work towards final placement. My aim is to become a skilled, reflective and caring educator who will have a positive influence on the children's early learning experiences and enable them to achieve their full potential.

The Menu Planning Assignment illustrates my understanding of Canada’s Food Guide and nutritional balance for young children. My Holistic Wellness Plan and Self-Care Assignment highlight the importance of maintaining wellness not just for children, but for educators themselves.

From this work, I learned that health promotion involves physical and emotional well-being. Self-regulation lessons, modeled stress-reduction skills, and a positive classroom environment are essential to children's growth and health. These projects also reminded me to take care of my own well-being in order to remain present and effective as a teacher.

This reflection helped me see the value of risky play in children's learning. Watching the girls climb the tree made me think about how such moments build confidence, balance, and decision-making. At first, I felt nervous, but The Benefits of Risky Play (Somerset County Council, n.d.) showed me that safe risk-taking is important. I’ve learned that my role is to supervise and support, not stop children from exploring. It also reminded me to talk with families about the benefits so they feel comfortable too.

HDLH theory and Hopi Martin's Indigenous knowledge provided me the ways of engaging in relationship with empathy, community consciousness, and respect for all identity. They showed me the ways to promote the four pillars of belonging, well-being, and engagement.

Build responsive relationships with children founded on respect, trust, and communication to make them feel secure, appreciated, and connected, so that they would develop a foundation for good learning and success in life.

This photo captures how a thoughtfully designed reading space can promote belonging, respect, and cultural inclusion. Inspired by Arndt (2018), I reflected on how educators also navigate their own identities while supporting children’s growth. The multicultural books, flags, and warm setup invite children and educators to see themselves in the environment. This space represents our collective story and the importance of building emotional connection through everyday classroom choices.

This photo captures a quiet moment before the children arrive, where I prepare the block area with intention and inclusion in mind. Inspired by Hong and Shaffer (2015), I reflected on how the setup of our classroom impacts children's access, engagement, and relationships. I thought about how peer play, mobility, and choice must all be supported through the environment. This moment represents how I’m learning to create spaces that welcome all learners and how meaningful partnerships with coworkers, therapists, and families—shape how we meet the needs of every child.

Comparing Montessori and Malaguzzi gave me the chance to explore two very different—but equally meaningful—approaches to early learning. It helped me see how combining structure with creativity can create a well-rounded, child-centered environment.

Completing the Op-Ed on play-based learning allowed me to take research I have learned and use it to make a real-world argument for something that I am passionate about. It showed me that research is not only for the classroom, but also something I can use to back up arguments for best practices and to stay current in a field that is constantly evolving. These projects have taught me how important it is to stay reflective, open to learning, and evidence-based in order to best serve the children and families I work with.
