TWENTY FIRST CENTURY FOR ART KIDS (2016)

Found furniture, electronics with sound, streamers, champagne bottle,

165 x 50 x 100 cm

In the gallery, we see a wardrobe. It omits the bass notes of muffled music and the indecipherable chatter of an enclosed party as if this wardrobe could transport us to some kind of adult Narnia or contains a rave for smurfs.

Yet when the viewer opens this door, the sound and vibrations stop and one is left pouring over the aftermath of a party that might have been. Once the door is closed again, the rumbles of the party recommence.

Adopting live recordings from a party at Space 3, a Sydney Artist Run Space of which Kyriakidis was director 2000 - 2006, the work points to the complex strata of art interactions and networks. Perhaps now more than ever, the aesthetics of the contemporary artist experience is foremost one of being a node in a network. Whilst this work could be construed as a critique of art’s exclusionary circles and rubbernecking, it also perhaps points to the agency that comes with this - no, corporate fat cats and socialites, you can’t come to our squat party, despite your FOMA (Fear of Missing Out) motto adopted by squeamish silicon valley life hacking entrepreneurs.

There is also something quite comforting in the artist’s emulation of a wrung-out dancefloor. The sticky streamers and footprints of walls and floors that have been worked over in cheap spirits and reverb, reminding us of the micro-political act of getting lost in the sound and a sea of bodies.

What inspired your craft of taking vinyl album shards and forming them into portraits?

Actually, it was an ankle injury after a DJing gig. I messed up my ankle carrying a crate of records. I hobbled back down to my basement and started breaking them up in my basement, out of frustration. More than art, I wanted to be a DJ. I loved manipulating songs, acting behind two turntables and a mixer. Even to this day, I get a better rush DJing for myself. That’s how I was able to amass a large catalogue of records, which is probably 20,000 to 25,000. Three months later, I came back with the idea to repurpose them, and I’ve been doing that ever since.

Indy Like a Local : Walter Lobyn Hamilton
https://www.visitindy.com/indianapolis-indy-like-a-local-walter-lobyn-hamilton

From the spontaneous crashing and breaking of his own record collection Lobyn Hamilton found beauty and and order in randomly shaped shards littered across the floor. This process is evident in his works, such as 'Dark Fantasy' and 'Return from Africa', which shows the placement of vinyl shards and cut-outs in intricate and complex designs onto a outlined canvas, demonstrating the interplay between spontaneity and control.
“I deal with and sort through the pieces that were broken and take from what was given”-Lobyn
Lobyn demonstrates his own style through his proficiency for drawing, composition and precision assemblage showcasing technique within the longstanding tradition of the record.

http://iiru.net/index.php/portfolio-item/circle-drawing/

Under the concept of “double exposure”, the interactive media art “circle drawing” created by Tae-eun Kim in 2006, incorporates sound representation (turn table) and visual aspect (drawing) to simulate visual depiction of sound. There are two turntables next to eachother, on the left it shows a real turntable that has been modified so the vinyl records only rotate without a sound and on the right, there is fake model of the same turntable but with a paper shaped like a vinyl record on top. When turning the lever, the needle/pen draws circular shapes on the rotating paper. Unlike the modern digital audio files Tae-eun Kim focused on the idea that records are physical objects that allows us to visualise sounds rather than hear sound. The record and the turntable are used as a tool of representation, a visual literacy. Kim explains the art as “A music you see”. Although, there are no sounds involved with drawing on the paper, the player is able imagine the sound while the lines are rotating on the paper.

As a piece that comments on modern society's destruction of our natural planet through climate change, Paterson's Ice Records (2008) involved using an underwater microphone to record the audio of moving glaciers in Iceland which were then pressed onto a record made of the frozen water from each glacier. This process was performed three times for three different glaciers. The Ice Records were played together on a turntable until all three records melted away two hours later, with the sound now solely existing on recorded film.

highlike. n.d. KATIE PATERSON – Langjökull, Snæfellsjökull, Solheimajökull.

Record industry has a long history, it’s been around since the world wars. Popular opera singer Enrico Caruso raised the profile of recorded music. He was the first Italian tenor who uses record, and made a lot of money from records. He probably made over 250 records, and convinced more and more artists that recording could be profitable and respectable. He is regarded as the greatest tenor in the history of vocal music.

There are three main reasons I might be mentioning, such as more realistic than traditional arts, more convenient and more special effects that artists can create. I found two digital artists and their works to show that. They are Mandy Jurgens and David villegas. Both of them are having amazing digital artworks that I can contact with traditional arts.

Reference:

Not a Media Artist or Media Art in itself, but the progression of the film's lifecycle is what I consider the ability to express/communicate using development of technology. George Lucas' original Star Wars trilogy initially released and produced on film with less than stellar post-production capabilities. As the years passed by, Lucas REproduced and re-released the film in different mediums (e.g laser disc, VHS, dvd, etc) with new or altered post-production effects, visuals, and sound. His use of technology and mediums allowed for the changes of his film after the initial release. Many of the mediums that were brought about during this time had many rapid innovations, changes, and development which influenced the way media art was able to be perceived, shared, and replicated.
