 Everyday items are becoming more expensive in Korea. Over the past few months, prices in the country have risen steadily for a wide range of products, including food, fuel, utilities, and household goods.

 In December 2016, the average retail price of a carton of 10 eggs increased 21.4 percent compared to 2015, according to the Korea Rural Economics Institute.* This government organization said that egg prices could soar during the first half of this year.

Consumers are not just feeling the pinch from higher egg prices. Although last year’s inflation rate was just 0.97 percent, the cost of everyday necessities, including gasoline and electricity, has significantly gone up.

Last November, for example, the prices of food and drinks were up 4.5 percent compared to the year before, making Korea’s food price inflation rate the third highest among OECD member countries, following only Mexico and Japan.

A single reason is not to blame for the rising cost of living. There are a variety of environmental, economic, and political factors at play. For instance, the rapid spread of avian influenza caused egg prices to jump dramatically. Record-breaking heat last summer pushed up the cost of vegetables, and decreasing cattle ranching drove up the prices of beef and pork. A failed fishing agreement with Japan also sent the cost of seafood higher.

In addition, many manufacturers claim that they are raising prices because raw materials have become more expensive.

Korean consumers are trying to deal with the price hikes by buying fewer items and looking for deals and discounts. The government also plans to step in and ease shortages and lower prices by watching the inflation trends carefully and allowing eggs and other items to be imported.

주제:Due to Korea’s extremely competitive educational system, it’s not unusual for high school students to attend private education facilities after school, called "hagwon" in Korean. Students nowadays say that they prefer their hagwon instructors and tend to rely on them more than their school teachers. According to an interview with a Korean teenager, the distrust in public education has been spreading in students, who need more help as the university entrance exam becomes more difficult.

The teenage student said their hagwon instructors consistently improve their teaching skills to earn a living, while their public school teachers don’t necessarily focus on enhancing their abilities, as they are public servants who have little possibility of losing their job. There have been growing calls for minimizing standardized exams in Korea and establishing an effective system to evaluate students in alternative ways in order to regain trust in public education. If there is a solid system that enables school teachers to become more competitive than private instructors, the student said there will be no need for them to spend money on private education.
