Our group has decided to set the scene in modern times. We think that this will help to highlight the differences in cultural norms across the two time periods (love and marriage today vs in Shakespearean times). Throughout the scene we see Juliet struggle with her personal feelings and societal conventions, like marriage. In order to demonstrate their interaction with societal norms through costumes, not only will our characters wear modern clothing but gender appropriate clothing as well (Romeo in pants and the color blue, and Juliet in a dress and the color pink). We want to show how the characters follow societal norms in spite of their true selves-- in the case of Romeo, how he is dressed (even though he will be played by a girl), and in the case of Juliet, how she acts and what she says (in spite of her true feelings). In terms of modeling Juliet's internal struggle, this will be evident in how her feelings towards Romeo and their relationship shift throughout the scene-- by the end of the scene (after Romeo proposes) we will have Juliet acting as dramatically as Romeo. In the script, we see our theme emerge as Juliet tells Romeo to be true to his words:

"Dost thou love me? I know thou wilt say 'ay,'
And I will take thy word. Yet if thou swear’st
Thou mayst prove false. At lovers' perjuries,
They say, Jove laughs. O gentle Romeo,
If thou dost love, pronounce it faithfully." (2.2.90-94)

Juliet is essentially asking Romeo to prove that he loves her, but if she truly felt that their love was strong, why would she be so worried about him "pronounc[ing] it faithfully"? This shows how she feels their love needs validation. Later in the scene, we see just what that validation is. At first, Juliet describes their love as " too rash, too unadvised, too sudden,
Too like the lightning, which doth cease to be" (2.2.118-119), but then Romeo asks for her "love's faithful vow" (2.2.127). Suddenly, Juliet feels differently, saying, "My bounty is as boundless as the sea,/ My love as deep. The more I give to thee,/ The more I have, for both are infinite" (2.2.132-135). Juliet is using marriage as validation for their love-- she goes from calling their love something momentary (like lightning) to something endless (like the sea). Since Romeo has now asked to marry her, she feels that this must mean their love is real. Juliet is a young girl who has just been introduced to the idea of marriage and has been conditioned to believe that that is what love is. Instead of going with what she's genuinely feeling, she is following along with what she has been conditioned to believe.
