Although satire uses irony to achieve its goals, it can also use other devices like humor and sarcasm. Therefore, irony and satire are not synonymous. Rather, irony is a satirical device that authors can use to satirize their subject matter. Also, all irony isn’t satirical. Irony is used in everyday conversation to convey sarcasm and subtlety of thought. Although satire, irony and sarcasm are terms that are often used synonymously, they are actually distinct words with subtle differences.
http://penandthepad.com/importance-irony-satire-3600.html

First of all, Irony is used to create a part of satire so they are very similar. However, the definition of satire is the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, where as the definition of irony is the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite. Between these two definitions you can see how irony is used to show stupidity but does not mean stupidity in itself.
