The Overuse of Technology by TAYLOR

Undeniably, modern society is dictated by our constant connection to technology. Plain and simple, we are married to it – for better or worse.

Everyone has seen the moody, withdrawn kid with music blasting out of his white earbuds, or the girl rapidly texting on her phone. The youth of today are constantly immersed in technology that promote nonstop communication and instant pleasure, whether through cell phones, gaming systems, or laptops. In this cartoon, I believe the artist is trying to show that the growth of technology has negatively influenced the social interactions of today's youth.

We are lacking socialization; instead of talking to and spending time with other people, we are getting all our information from the Internet. The Internet is an amazing resource, but there are some things it cannot teach or give you. It cannot teach you the value of spending time with friends and family, or how to live life to the fullest by being present in the current moment.

We have all heard it, how technology has taken over the world and left us as zombies which is what I believe this author is trying to portray. We are shells of who we may have been, because instead of looking around and experiencing life we are dependent upon a lit up screen.

The artist of this cartoon is trying to show how talking to someone on the phone or face to face has become harder. We are so used to speaking in messages to people behind a screen that we cant see that talking in real time to someone right in front of us becomes nerve racking. We have lost social skills, manners, and expect everything to be delivered to us as fast as the Internet does.

Technology pretty much runs our lives these days. Sometimes we are so used to relying on technology to help us out, we forget how to act in a world without it. I went about creating this post by finding four pictures/comics representing how technology has grown to take over our lives. Centered between the four pictures is a video clip, "Can We Auto-Correct Humanity?" The video goes into depth on why he refuses to let technology control him. The harm that comes with the 'addiction' and how sad it is to see others avoid simple face-to-face conversation. "You need not delete your social networks or destroy your cell phones, the message is simple, be balanced, be mindful, be present, be here."
