Whilst editing and developing my final production (magazine advert), i approached a wall half way through. I had just created the final album cover design and posted it on top of the advert. My problem came from procrastinating on where i should place the image of the album cover on my advert. I kept in mind that i had to clearly communicate particular motifs through visuals and at the same time, support the common conventions of a magazine advert. For this reason, i made the decision to revisit my previous research task, where i looked at how contemporary artists often advertise themselves on magazine covers. Almost always, in a portrait formatted magazine advert, the text and image of the new album cover is positioned at the bottom. My problem was "But which corner?"

Positioning the album cover to the bottom left corner offers a lot of space to work with. In this circumstance, adjacent to the album cover, there is a huge amount of blank space to add more text and symbiotic if need be. Not only is there a large surface, but it is an evenly blackened area which will compliment white text onto of it, therefore making it more eye catching. The problem with this positioning is that the image of the album cover is hiding the artists hand that rests on the back of her chair. In this image, Melia wears a flashy watch and a meddi ring. The hand is also beautifully lit, with a slightly blueish tint that evens out the colour balance and elements in the photograph as a whole. Of course, the flashiness and jewellery play a huge part in the synergy and conventions of my magazine advert as well as the music video. Fir this reason it has become necessary to demonstrate an understanding of motifs that appear consistent throughout the promotion of an artist.

Exactly the same as if the album cover was placed on the bottom right corner. It would reveal the hand and flashy watch but at the same time, it will be a waste of good quality space to work in. To further add damage, by placing the image to the bottom right, we also conceal the artists collar bone. Beauty comes so frequent and demanding in this type of advertisement and i want to ensure that i edit this advert in favour of complimenting the artists good looks rather that trying to hide her. I also want to give the audience the impression that this artist and her music is very welcoming. By showing a friendly and open face, we draw in the audience a lot quicker.

That all said, if i was to place the album in the bottom left corner, i would be completely obscuring the flashy synergistic qualities, because we can still clearly see that the artist wears other pieces of jewellery. The two huge earrings were care fully selected. The size needed to be reasonably large to attract the glance of an audience member quicker and to also communicate a sense of wealth and luxury that most Hip Hop and R&B musicians promote. On top of that, Melia also wears a nose ring that ever so slightly glistens from he bounce of the flash.

I also thought it is important that i collect a bit of evidence before i make any final decisions. My eye for appealing art may not be the best as wide audience group do vary slightly and people may have different preferences. I scouted the class rooms in hopes of finding conventional target audience members of Hip hop and R&B music. A large percentage of Melia's target audience are males and females aged between 16-24 and the college seemed like a great place to start gathering information on how my progress is coming along so far. As you have seen in the two youtube posts above this one. I was given the opportunity to interview 3 students and ask for their opinion. Long story short, they all came up with really good observations, however the majority was pointing towards the design where the album cover was placed in the left hand corner. I also agree that this is a sensible option because tends to show off the artist more when images are open and clear. Onto of that i am still able to salvage motifs and conventions because the audience will still be able to see the 3 piercings the Melia wears.
