Solidarity and Covenant

Solidarity is a feeling when one suffers, we all suffer; and when one rejoices, we all rejoice. We feel each others pain and happiness. For example, as stated in class, when a student gets accepted in their number one choice for college, EVERYONE is happy for them. More personally, as with my service project, I had the feeling of solidarity when residents' faces (of the nursing home I volunteered at) glowed up in happiness when they saw a meal that they haven't eaten since their young ages or even childhood. When they rejoiced, I rejoiced.

Covenant plays an important part in Solidarity as well. The definition of covenant is promise made with no need of a signature; only love, trust, faith, and G*d are part of a covenant. Covenant plays into solidarity because solidarity is seeking the good of the other which is necessary for a covenant. Generosity is also an important aspect of solidarity. Generosity is giving back to the world and others around you, and seeking for those others to do the same as well; for example, the Pay It Forward movement. When generosity is a part of society, everyone rejoices even if they aren't directly affected by it.

The photo below is of a student reacting to his acceptance notice to his number one choice college and his parents are pictured in the background recording his reaction and rejoicing with him.

Justice

Justice is helping those in need. From a faith in G*d perspective, Justice sees, and justice is forever revolving with society. But from a secular perspective, Justice is blind. In both a secular and non-secular standpoint, justice is given first to those most vulnerable, hence the phrase "distributive justice". I love the example given in class which I will now word to the best of my ability. If the president is on a bus and the bus hits a homeless man on the street and both the president and the homeless man are injured, who does the paramedics go to first? The answer is simple. The paramedics will assist whoever is most harmed/ most vulnerable. Another example was of the truckers blocking the freeway to save the suicidal man above from jumping off the overpass. They blocked thousands of people from their commute for one person, the most vulnerable. We prioritize justice because justice can save everyone, but vulnerability has a time limit.

The picture below is of the legal justice symbol of a scale. This may be seen as wrong because distributive justice doesn't circle around equality, but think of it this way; when the scale tips, one side is more vulnerable than the other, symbolizing how when one person is more vulnerable than another (one side of the scale is lower than another), the most vulnerable must receive justice first.
