I think it would be a good idea to do an editing and proofreading workshop. We can give practical tips and tricks to students about how to edit and proofread their papers before they come to the writing center so we can help them more efficiently. Also, teaching them how to use Microsoft Editor (or Google Editor), an extension service like Grammarly, and giving them our "editing and proofreading superstitions" or tips could be helpful as well. Thoughts?

Maybe for the spring with COMP students? Pull in some librarians to help with this (i.e., Mary/ Janeen?). Have workshops for MLA, APA, Chicago, Turabian, and SBL? Add in citations and works-cited and proper citation usage in this as well?

Canva Pro?

To create a branding kit, Canva pro (or Canva free) is really helpful for this. Flyers can be created and saved and PowerPoints can be made with this. Canva can be hard to adjust to if you are not used to it, but its so amazing!

Decorating in the Writing Center

Phoenix Publishing Party

This is for next semester. Typically they distribute copies of the Phoenix in the sub. I wonder if they would be interested in hosting the Phoenix party in the writing center.

We may not have enough space, but it could be a fun way to partner with them.

Professor Collaboration

I would love to have some of the comp professors/humanities professors come in and do an event with us. It could be a story time/Q and A (I am imagining a similar atmosphere to my2words). Where professors share their writing inspiration, processes, favorite things about writing, general tips, etc. I think it would be a fun way for students to see a different side of professors.

Anti-Procrastination Open Hours

Especially for Comp next year...

We could have weekly open hours where we provide snacks, and students come in and work on HW/writing they have been avoiding. Ideas can be discussed, and the writing coaches can provide additional support. This would help with writer's block and procrastination.

Creative baskets

What do y'all think about making creative baskets for tutors and students to use during sessions? These would include different color notecards, sticky notes, highlighters, and markers for hands on and visual learners. I attended a session at the writing center conference about this and I found it extremely helpful. This allows for tutors to be creative in how they approach the writing process by using tactile materials that the writer can move around and color code. I would be happy to make these baskets if everyone likes the idea.

I just replaced the chairs! Used $650 chairs for $65 each. :) No arms though--sorry. One quirk to note. You press DOWN on the level to go up AND down, so that's a little different. Try them out!

Floor Lamps

What if teachers/the library made making a writing center account mandatory? I've noticed that the walk-in situation is a little tricky if the student doesn't have a lot of time and has to go through the process of creating an account on the spot. I'm unsure if this has been suggested already... but I thought I'd toss it out.

Organizer on Bookshelf

I would like to use the organizer on the bookshelf to organize and label the papers in our binders so they are easier to find. The next time a few of you have a free hour, would you look through the binders and think about how to organize/label the stuff in them? We'll be getting lots more material from faculty moving forward, so those will need to be in categories and not by faculty or class. There are labels in the bottom right compartment. Before you start, make sure we'll be able to see the labels with the papers in them--otherwise we may need to think about a different kind of label.

Some sort of presence at Connections in April?

Bedford Books

Some of us were talking about how we have our Bedford books but we don't always have them in the Writing Center. One thought was to just have them here in the Writing Center for us to use while doing training but then we thought about how we aren't always going to be doing our training in the Writing Center. Thoughts on how we can balance having the books in both places? Should the Bedford readings also be scanned into Canvas?

We need to do a second CMS workshop for 1st year Emmanuel students :)

I was talking with Jona and he had an idea for students to come by for a quick 5-10 minute WC conference appointment after the COMP classes in Derthick Hall (i.e. get a classroom and have coaches available for 5-10 minutes after COMP).
