When I struggle to treat myself kindly, I think of what I'd say to a friend (and how I'd say it). Would I be unforgiving, demanding or expect her to be a superhuman? NO! Humanity is what we cherish and connect with in others, so my own humanness - challenges included - is also something to celebrate.

Historically, has self-doubt been ingrained in women as part of 'keeping us in our place'? Making us feel not good enough and therefore turning our anger inward, rather than challenging societies that aren't as good as we and our sisters deserve? Although pushing myself to the limit feels like a safety strategy, I can stand up for the world I want to see for other women and girls better by treating myself well.

When I'm feeling out of my depth I sometimes remind myself that far stupider people than me have managed to complete this task/role/job. I also find it helpful to remember that if I, a person of reasonable intellect, is struggling with something, perhaps that thing is simply badly designed. And in which case it's GOOD for me to have a problem with it, because it highlights the issue.

If being an imposter means you are different to those who have been in positions of authority until now, then this is something to embrace and celebrate. I have long felt like an imposter - in a range of roles - and that is a powerful place to be. If you are looking at things from a fresh perspective, you can bring new ideas, lived experience, an understanding of what it is like to be 'on the outside' and crucially, you can smash the illusion that you have to 'fit in' or look, think and feel like those who have come before you or those who are currently in positions of authority. Being an imposter is empowering and opens up opportunities for you to hold the door open for other imposters to shake up the status quo. Wear it with pride.
