Before the Assassination the Serbian government ordered the Serbian army to mobilize and ask Russia for assistance because they had an idea that they might go to war. The Assassination of the Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand —was shot to death with his wife, Sophie, by Gavrilo Princip on June 28, 1914, which led to WW1 because Austria - Hungary gave Serbia an ultimatum which ultimately was rejected. I mean they did assassinate their heir!

WWI used military as their main strategy, which some might say that they could have gone to a total war.
Military Strategies
Some military tactics they used were, wearing down the enemy( using war of attrition and this was when one had greater resources) , designated attacks(Schlieffen Plan to attack France and Belgium which led to Russia having to mobilize their forces), and when they used warfare on land(trench warefare which was hiding/fighting in trenches and or holes which led the soliders to have morale) and sea(Having Unrestricted Submarine Warfare (which also had a blockade of naval ships) under the ruler, Kaiser Wilhelm II.)
Some had a casualty and some had more than others and some may have sparked a huge conflict in the end. Eventually, they had a stalemate in Europe!

The main ruler doing this time period was Woodrow Wilson, who had been president in office. He believed that we had to have neutrality. But with Germany taking action, Wilson didnt exactly agree which made them butt heads and ultimately led to a rivalry. On March 8th, 1915, they had sinked the Lucitania,
