Here at The Greenhouse, we take pride in our welcoming environment! Our green colored accent walls promote positivity throughout the school. We have all been through middle school. Peer pressure as an adolescent can be stressful, which is why we have chosen to paint the walls the color green, as it creates a calm and peaceful vibe.

Our cleaning protocol is exceptional to ensure that we will continue having in-person classes for as long as possible during this time. You will notice that our classes have their own unique clean smells, but none smell of chemicals. That is because we like to make sure that students can focus in their classes and are actively engaged. Depending on the teacher, classrooms consist of various smells such as lemon, rosemary, spearmint, sweet orange, and peppermint.

In some of our classes, teachers have the opportunity to take their students outside to learn more about agriculture, take a brain break, or just to simply give back to the Earth. One of our main focus points at The Greenhouse is giving back. Our community does so much to support our school district, so it is only right that we give back to them!

Curriculum

We have adopted a project-based learning curriculum to benefit our students in the long run. Three of the most important things that we can teach our students is the ability to communicate, collaborate, and think critically. Throughout PBL courses, students learn practical skills that are necessary for the real world. These skills can be transferred from core classes to problems that students will face outside of school. The courses are mostly student-led, with some teacher guidance. Students are required to take the four main core classes (Science, Mathematics, English Language Arts, History) and a home economics class, but have full control over what other classes they choose to take.

We have many hands on courses that are offered including:

*Design and Modeling
*Automation and Robotics
*App Creators
*Computer Science for Innovators and Makers
*Energy and the Environment
*Flight and Space
*Science of Technology
*Magic of Electrons
*Green Architecture
*Medical Detectives

In each of these classes, students are given a challenge and a final product to try to replicate. They are given minimal guidance, which allows them to think critically. We want our students to experience some level of failure before they ask for assistance. In their project-based learning classes, they are given a partner to complete their objectives. This helps students learn collaboration and communication skills. Students must be able to show that they can perform a task given to them before moving on to the next objective.

We are a year long schooling program. Students attend school for nine weeks, then have a three week break, and are given a summer break that is only a month long.

Each week they attend school six days a week, but are out of school by noon so they have more time in their day to be at home with their families while also seeing their teachers more frequently in order to retain concepts learned in the classroom rather than needing refreshed over it after each weekend.

Safety is a major concern of ours. We want our students to feel safe without feeling as though they are "in a prison" as some students would call it. We do have temperature checks when students walk in, and visitors have to buzz into the office. An officer comes around the building to make sure there isn't any suspicious activity happening within the school. There are cameras on the outside of the building and in the hallways so that the office can monitor who is in the hallways.

To further protect our students, each classroom has two locks. One is a regular door lock that can be unlocked from the outside, and the other is a door lock that is bolted onto the inside classroom door. This ensures that the teachers can keep their students safe in the case of a potential intruder.

At The Greenhouse, we try to go as paperless as possible. During a time such as the pandemic, students are in and out of school due to having to be quarantined. Having paperless classrooms makes the remote transition a lot smoother, and makes it more difficult for students to lose their assignments. Another benefit of going paperless is that we help reduce the total amount of paper that is used each year within school districts.

Throughout our courses, we help our students learn the "three C's" for a successful future: communication, collaboration, and critical thinking. These skills will be used through all stages of life. Character Education is integrated into their project-based learning classes because those courses challenge the students to work more with others, and what strategies are best used to complete a task successfully.

To help our students become prepared for life after their academic career we teach them life and business skills by requiring cooking and life skills classes. In these courses, the students learn to cook, clean properly and safely, and sew. They put these skills to the test by having market days for fundraisers. They can make crafts, cook, or anything they imagine and sell it for profit and a portion goes to them and another portion goes back to the school to provide materials for the students to use in the classroom.

One of the previously mentioned purposes of project-based learning classes is to teach life skills, but another important focus of project based learning is to introduce students to technology and potential career options. Many of the courses offered provide a small taste into high demand, hands on careers.

Our local Johnson’s Garden Center is partnered with our school and once a month we have a visitor come to the school and help our students learn to garden properly and use their newfound knowledge to start their own garden at home if they wish!
