From time to time, I'll ask students to find a place on Google Maps and simply observe the place. We've done this with Spokane Indiana for Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time and The US Marshall Islands for our climate change unit. What can you learn about a setting by observing is from both the street level and a bird's eye view?

Students have little experience with organizing digital file systems. If a document doesn't appear at the top of a student's "Recent" list on Google Drive, I don't know if they would be able to find it.

File organization! The concept of google drive has largely made file organization unnecessary, but I can't be convinced that some level of file organization/folder system doesn't make life easier in general

I find that many students don't have basic technology or typing skills. For example, some don't know that they tab key on the keyboard indents a sentence.

I am really concerned about kids physically taking apart parts of the Chromebooks and wearing them around their necks, breaking pieces off, drawing on the machines, etc. I kind of want them to see the work and expense that goes into each and every Chromebook. Maybe a trip to Jesus's workshop would be helpful, especially early on. There might be an option for some restorative justice work as well.

Tone & Code Switching

Students need to learn communicate in a tone specific to the audience. Emailing your teacher in all capital letters and angry emojis is not going to get the response you want. Social media posting and more formal communication are different functions.

Students regularly mistreat their devices. In some ways, they're showing they understand how to use their Chromebook. Some know how to get around the firewall on their computer. In other ways, they are showing that they don't understand how the device works or how to use it (ripping apart the computers, etc.)
