What does it mean to be Well-Educated

The article suggests that the purpose of schooling is
varied.

It suggests that learning is a continual process and that
there is no concrete definition of what being “well educated” actually means.

It also mentions that the aim of school is to prepare
students for “real life” and that acquiring knowledge should be for a purpose.
Students should dictate the curriculum, not vice versa.

Are schools and teachers redundandt in the digital age?

Our current schooling systems are a bit outdated as they where designed in the industrial era revolving around big classrooms and a teacher running the classroom as the key knowledge holder of the class. The teacher is the one who is in control of what and how the learning is taking place in the classroom. Students are in the classroom just to retain information and not necessarily learning. Being the key knowledge holder of the class, in theory, students can never be smarter or more educated in a specific topic. In the digital world, most students have access to the internet via their phone, laptop or PC. Because of all this access students have at their finger tips easy access to questions that can be found online or asked to another expert. The face to face engagement in the classroom is slowly fading away with more online classes and easy, freely and readily available content which can be found using a common search engine. The classroom has to be more engaging to the students as they can easily float away and start to get bored in the classroom. Technology based learning has its benefits. Here is a list of a few benefits technology has with students:

- Technology is motivating and enthusiasts students to be more engaging.

- Students can learn why they are ready.

- Students can work together wherever they are in the world.

- Students can choose a learning strategy that suits them.

- The pace of learning is determined by the student.

- Students can learn by themselves.

- Online resources are very easily accessible.

As teachers, we need to embrace this new technology and restructure the classroom environment to provide greater opportunities than what an industrial face to face classroom would provide. Teachers in the classroom should not be redundant but embraced and educated in new technologies which would help and provide students with a better learning environment.
