Despite this, the nation faces a dire situation with rampant unemployment, homelessness, and hunger. Blame is cast on banks, tycoons, and a perceived government failure to regulate the economy and labor laws effectively.

With a staggering 25% unemployment rate, survival becomes paramount as Americans endure through these times of terror, hoping for the resurgence of the great American dream.

Breaking News! Events of the Great Depression

The last few years we have seen a change in the great depression that has been pretty rough lately. Women got employment outside of their home , They fought for their equal rights. Equal rights were so important to women because it was for their justice. Women also felt as if the rights were not equal because they couldn't vote when men voted, they were able to vote the 19th amendment  which was ( june 4 1919). The reason why women couldn't vote was because we thought they were childlike and thought they were not independent at all, so the women fought until they were able to vote and when they were able to vote they proved to the men why they should have voted sooner than later. For womens workforce, more women entered it during the economically tough era, but the jobs they took were regulated to “womens work” and they were poorly paid but they were in industries that were less impacted by the stock market. Women worked long hours, usually more than fifty hours per week, for their low wages. Their average annual pay in 1937 was $525 compared with $1,027 for men. This wage discrimination and gap persisted beyond the Great depression and continues to be a challenge for women in the workforce. Over 25 percent of the National Recovery Administrations wage codes set lower wages for women. From 1930-1940, the number of employed women in the United States rose 24 percent from 10.5 million to 13 million. Since there were worse economic conditions during the great depression, there was an immediate increase in women’s work in the 1930’s across all age groups. Generally, women were limited to jobs that fit within existing gender ideologies. They were considered “unsuitable” for physically-demanding jobs like heavy construction. In Federal Emergency Relief Administration camps, women’s work included canning foods, sewing, producing clothes and mattresses, or working as housekeeping aides for families that were in need of help. The gender limitations were also compounded with racial stereotypes. An example being, employees who worked as housekeeping aides were African American women. Before the great depression, women's primary roles were to marry and become housewives. Married women typically raised children and worked in the home. Women furthering their education were slim. However, during the economic change, some women took that opportunity to attend college. In the past, women would rely on their husbands for their financial support, but with the growth of men without employment, women took their financial uses into their own hands. Role changes in the workforce had become the norm for women coping with and adapting to the economic changes brought on by the great depression. Places of employment for women included restaurants, factories, laundries and beauty shops. Some even worked as teachers, secretaries, librarians and nurses. Even though the great depression was an economic crisis, it served as an opportunity to increase their presence in the workforce.
